Digimon Adventure
Ryo's role in the Adventure series is so obscure, that you'll barely notice that he's there (Barely, meaning that he doesnt do much, but its not hard to notice him if your loyal to Zero 2)
We first see Ryo in the 2nd Digimon movie, based on the Zero 1 series. He's up in the mountains, with a fellow mountain climber, typing furiously on his laptop computer as a nuclear missle shoots by
*......*
What Ryo is doing, is typing letters of encouragement to Tai and the others as they battle Diaboromon, Unlike his Wonderswan counterpart, where he is with Ken in his bedroom watching the battle.
We loose sight of Ryo for a few months, then he pops up again, during Kens flashbacks to his past.
(Yes! That is him you people who thought he was another version of Gennai!)
First, we see him when Ken is in a coma, looking back to the time he fist came to the Digital world.
Ryo Ryo! His first apperance in a real Anime!
After Ken wakes up, we see nothing of Ryo until episode 43, when Ken goes to sleep after the trip to Mexico and other places around the world. Then, he dreams of being in the desert again, with Ryo and Wormmon, watching Milleniummon being Deleted. Apparently, this is the part in Tag tamers when Ryo and Ken find each other and finally defeat Milleniummon.
He is walking in a desert, walking against the wind with Wormmon and Ryo. A Gazimon attacks, and Wormmon defeats him, but he gets hurt. Ryo stands by and watches Wormmon and little Ken hug each other. What we notice is that Ryo is wearing his purple Military outfit he wore in Tag and D-1 Tamers. This means that the thing we were watching was the Anime version ^_^
As with the game, After Milleniummon is deleted, the dark spores are released into the air. The spores aim for Ryo, for some unknown reason, but Ken, seeing them as a potential threat to his friend, pushes Ryo to the ground.The spores then dig into the back of Kens neck, and years later turn him into the monster Digimon Emperor.
Many people speculate of what might have happened if the spores did hit Ryo, but we know for a fact it didn't happen.
There are even thoughts that the Zero 01 DigiDestined even knew about Ryo's existance outside of the game, but they refused to speak about him, since it was their fault that he was blasted away into Digital space.

We see nothing of Ryo until half way through Tamers, were he finally gets a star role instead of just being a silent extra!
