An InvitationA group of young scribes sat around a particularly well lit table in the library of Nidus Ryslen. Shiny silver cards covered the table, each one painted with white snowflakes that ranged from the size of a small coin to more elaborate lacy flakes that covered half of the card. Each flake was unique, though some were quite similar in design, and every card had an interesting yet unique collection upon it. The scribes chatted quietly amongst themselves as they painted. From time to time the Master Archivists wuld stop to have a look, or Prima Jeyann, or even her mother, Tiyanni, the last real Weyrwoman Ryslen had. "You have very good brush control." Q'wil said, complementing one of the youngest at the table. She was twelve and had steadier hands than some of the teens. And she blushed beautifully. "Thank you." She said quietly. "We're almost done with the cards, Dux Q'wil." One of the boys - Jami - said. Tocha giggled. "Duck's Quill." Q'will smiled at that. "Good. How many of you are staying to work on the calligraphy?" About half of the group made some indication (careful not to jostle the table or elbow their neighbor), Jami and Tocha among them. The Archivists weren't excluding the younger apprentices. Good. Q'wil went and gathered the carefully cut papers and the rest of the equipment. When the scribes had finished cleaning up from painting, the 'difficult' work began. Q'wil sat with them and wrote out a few copies, and his brother Q'wic and Sian joined them all. The importance of this project struck home for them then, especially when a bottle of glistening silver ink was set on the table. Tocha was next to finish a copy, and the Master Archivist gave her a list of names and a sizable stack of envelopes. She looked over it quickly. "Do you want anything on it other than the names?" She asked. "No, just that." He smiled, and Tocha did too. It wasn't often that envelopes were addressed to some of the most important people in the Nexus -- rarer still for it to be all of them. That was honor enough -- then he gave her the silver ink. It was enough to make the hand of an experienced scribe shake, but Tocha was not disturbed. "If you need help, ask." She nodded her understanding and picked up her pen. Aern Kshau she wrote carefully. Baeris Kshau The name on the front of the ivory parchment envelope glimmers in the light, and on the reverse it is sealed with brilliant crimson wax imprinted with the stylized dragon and sun crest of Nidus Ryslen. White snowflakes grace the silver card - specially imported from offworld - showing through the fragile, transparent vellum paper and simply but fashionably bordering the short but elegant message written in the purest black. The two pieces are held together by a short ribbon of shining snow white.
