The Grey River

The majestic Grey river as it sweeps past the town of Greymouth out into the Tasman Sea. A good place to swim? to fish?

The West Coast of New Zealand's South Island is visited by thousands of tourists every year who go to see its unspoiled natural beauty.

But take the 2 minute stroll down to the river from the town and what do you learn?

Even a tiny population in a vast and isolated area will foul their own doorstep to save a few dollars.

West Coast Regional Council - June 2003

Lower Grey River

"The popular Taylorville swimming hole, has had a poor water quality rating at times due to discharges of septic tank effluent. The Grey River downstream of Dobson has significantly higher concentrations of faecal bacteria than upstream at Kiwi Point or Ngahere.

Raw sewage solids are visible near sewer outfalls at Greymouth and Cobden."

Grey District Council - District Plan

Wastewater

"Greymouth/Cobden/Blaketown have collection schemes which discharge directly into the Grey River as part of the stormwater system. Other townships/built-up areas have septic tank systems in-place with that of Blackball, and to a lesser extent Taylorville, not being of an acceptable standard
