A WINTRY MILE Walk a mile in the winter twilight, Mark its whiteness and breathe its cold, Reach your hand to the sunset embers, Warm them there, and when you are old There will be times when you will recall it: A beautiful, perfect, shining while, That will glow in your heart like a splendid diamond--- You will remember that winter mile. You will recall the clean cold stinging Of winter wind on your throat and lips; The lift of your heart in its youthful gladness, The tingle of blood to your finger tips; You will have drawn to your heart forever This hour, the snow, the light in the west--- Walk awhile in the winter twilight, Store its treasures within your breast.
