FUEL TANKS

This belongs under the EXTERIOR chapter but since it's more engine related, I'll put it here.
Several different tanks were installed, depending on equipment and/or production year.

INJECTION vs CARBURETTORS
- All carburettor engines have a block mounted mechanical fuelpump which suck petrol from the tank.
- All injection engines have an electric fuelpump installed inside the tank, which pressurize the feed-pipe.

FEED & RETURN PIPES vs FEED PIPE ONLY
- Carburetted B-engines have a fuelpump with a built-in pressure regulator, and therefore no return pipe.
- Carburetted H-engines have a "constant-flow" fuelpump, and therefore needs a return pipe.
- All injection engines have a return pipe.

2-DOOR vs 3-DOOR vs 4-DOOR vs 5-DOOR
2/4-door 99 saloons have the tank-filler on the left rear wing. The large filler-hose enters the tank at the left side.
3/5-door 99 hatchbacks, the Saab 90 and all 900's have the tank-filler on the right rear wing. The large filler-hose enters the tank at the rear, under the boot's "basement-lid".

STEEL vs PLASTICS
In 1979 steel tanks were discontinued and plastics introduced.
In 1981 the 900 saloon was introduced. It had a rear floorpan with a new shape, so the tank could be made larger. In the name of rationalizing, Saab changed the rear floorpan in the hatchback aswell, that year.
2/4-door 99 saloons kept the old floorpan, but the plastic tank is still a little larger.

SUM UP
Confused? Not after this! Here's a guide to which cars need which tanks, when installing K-jetronic injecton.

A 2/4-door 99 will need the tank from a:
- m75 or later 2-d LE.
- m75 or later 2-d EMS.
- m76 or m77 GLE.
- m79 or m80 Turbo. (Plastic)
- m80 or m81 GLi. (Plastic)

A 2-door 90 will need the tank from a:
- m81 or later 900 with K-jetronic injection. (Plastic)

A 3/5-door 99 will need the tank from a:
- m75 or later 3-d LE.
- m78 or later 3-d EMS.
- m78 GLE.
- m78 Turbo.
- m79 or m80 900 with K-jetronic injection. (Plastic)
