SAAB INNOVATIONS
A
lot of car companies have presented various clever (or
not so) "inventions" for as long as cars have existed.
Saab has a history of presenting simple, but ingenious technical innovations
that often became a standard in the automotive world. A small list of
Saab firsts:
1963: Diagonally split, dual brake circuits.
1971: Headlight wipers/washers.
1972: Electric heated seat.
1972: Side impact bars in the doors.
1978: Pollen filter for heating/ventilation air.
1980: APC, electronic management of the turbo, incorporating a
knock sensor.
1985: Saab DI, (Direct Ignition),
one coil on top of each sparkplug.
1991: CFC-free air conditioning. Yup. Saab pioneered this one.
Now Chloride Fluor Carbone is banned in AC's.
1997: Anti-whiplash, active head restraints.
2000: Variable Compression engine. Not a new idea. What's new,
is that Saab made it work.
