Kiama Quarriers vs Razorbacks
The Kiama ladies soccer team traveled the long trip to Douglas Park on Sunday to take on newcomers Razorbacks. As in recent weeks the Kiama team were short players due to other commitments. This didn’t stop the Quarriers showing their fighting pride only going down two nil to a full strength Razorbacks side, who are sitting in fifth spot on the competition table. Although Kiama only had nine players they took the game to the opposition and only good defending from Razorbacks kept Kiama out. Jenny Scott playing a lone striker role was causing havoc up front having two shots saved by the Razorbacks keeper and putting two just over the top from close range.
Despite having the better of chances it was Razorbacks who scored with a well placed twenty metre shot that caught Kiama off guard, just prior to half time. The second half started the same as the first with Kiama sitting back, getting the ball and attacking with quick counter attacks. Roslyn Montefiore was causing trouble with her pace out wide and was getting good service from Heyleigh Beringer and Nicole Petit. The Kiama girls were unlucky when Heyleigh beat four Razorbacks defenders on a great run and only to see her shot beat the keeper but not the post. Further frustration when the rebound came out to Roslyn Whose follow up shot also hit the post and was finally cleared by desperate defending. Kiama had another close chance when Jenny Scott beat a defender and crossed the ball only to see it run across the goal mouth with no one close enough to put it away.
While Kiama were attacking they were suspect to Razorbacks on the break and that’s where the second goal came from. A big clearance and through ball caught out the Kiama defence and the Razorbacks striker rounded Cathy Castles in goal to finish off the Quarriers. Although beaten the girls can hold their heads high with a gallant fighting effort. All girls played well with defenders Mel Carlson and young Claire Roche dishing out some bone crushing tackles, and not being intimidated by a striker intent on giving out cheap shots on players. The opposition must be happy that young Claire is not six foot and bigger, some of her tackles are crunchers but legal.
The two Karens , Moses and Larsen never stopped running and big games by Nicole and Heyleigh who won every tackle and laid off some great balls. Roslyn had her best game of the year but was just piped by Jenny Scott for Kiama Leagues player of the match. Even though she was outnumbered five to one Jenny caused problems every time she got the ball. Next weeks game is against the high flying University at Kiama Leisure centre on Sunday with kick-off at 9:30am. Hopefully a full team and some crowd support will help the Kiama girls to an upset victory.
