Quarry Vs Patterson I-June 9, 1967 L.A.
Floyd Patterson was rated the #4 contender in the world at this point and was itching to get another title shot at Muhammed Ail. He had just come off three straight knockout wins including a third round KO of tough Englishmen Henry Cooper.  He had just beaten Willie Johnson and Bill McMurray by quick knockouts and was hoping to add the inexperienced Quarry to his knockout ledger. Flayed came in with a record of  46-5 with 35 knockouts.  Jerry Quarry was the #10 rated contender in the world on the basis of his decision wins over Brian London and Joey Orbillo and came in with a record of 23-1-3 with 14 knockouts. He had just knocked out the badly faded contender Alex Miteff in three rounds. This win would put him on the heavyweight map and into America's consciousness overnight. Let's see how this controversial fight went. Scoring in California was as follows- 5 points maximum in a round. A 10-9 round would be 1-0 for the fighter and a 10-8 round would be 2-0 for a fighter.  An even round is scored 0 points for each fighter.

Here's the fight as I saw it.-Green are the round scores as I scored it, red is important text like a cut, great punch or knockdown.

Round 1- Slow start to the round with Patterson boxing and moving.  Quarry lands a decent body shot and a nice left hook is the aggressor to start.  Flayed starting slow and measuring his younger opponent while circling away.  Quarry's Round- 1-0

Round 2- Both fighters covering still.  Quarry counters with a hook after Pattern lands a hook of his own.  Things starting to open up a bit. Quarry feints to the body then goes to the head with a left hook. Pattern is down!! He gets up at the count of two and seems a bit stunned. Quarry then lands a huge right hand, Pattern crumbles to the canvas again. Patterson struggles up at 5. Patterson is holding and trying to stay on his feet. Quarry throwing a lot of shots going for the knockout blow, but they are failing to land. Huge round for Quarry.  Quarry's Round- 3-0  (4-0) Quarry

Round 3- Patterson moving from the outside trying to get his wits back. The pace has slowed as the last round was fought at a maniac's pace. Patterson comes with a quick combo and Quarry is a bit stunned!
Patterson is unloading with shots. Quarry back with a right, but Patterson is doing some nice work this round. Patterson's Round- 1-0  (4-1) Quarry

Round 4- Quarry coming forward again trying to get back momentum.  Patterson is moving beautifully and looks completely recovered now.  Patterson lands a nice hook and Quarry is cut over the eye. Quarry is cut over his right eye! Patterson is landing well here as Quarry tries to counter.
Patterson's Round- 1-0  (4-2) Quarry

Round 5- Quarry from off the ropes hits Patterson with a nice right.  Patterson backs away and fires home a nice combo. Close round early as they circle each other.  Patterson with a nice left and Quarry is being out-gunned in close now as he appears to be very tired.  Patterson is making his way back into this fight. Patterson's Round- 1-0  (4-3) Quarry

Round 6- Patterson gets caught early in the round with a nice Quarry right hand.  Patterson backs away and moves back forward with nice shots of his own.  Floyd is still getting the better of the exchanges, but is missing more this round.  Quarry with three nice body shots as Patterson is more wild this round. Quarry doing his best work since the 2nd round.  Even Round 0-0   (4-3) Quarry

Round 7- Patterson comes out jabbing.  Quarry trying to work on the inside, but is also doing most of the holding.  Quarry lands a big right, Patterson may be stunned.  Quarry lands a nice combo and Patterson isn't doing much this round.  Patterson crashes home a quick left out of nowhere and down falls Quarry!! Quarry had the round but it goes the other way! Patterson's Round- 2-0  (5-4) Patterson

Round 8- Quarry needs to make a comeback now.  Patterson still moving in and out effectively.  Patterson pins Jerry against the ropes and is landing well.  Patterson getting the better of it as Quarry tries to fight back.  Patterson landing quick shots to take the round.
Patterson's Round- 1-0  (6-4) Patterson

Round 9-  Quarry Comes out more aggressive as he must know he has fallen behind.  Floyd is slower this round as he plays defensive.  Quarry lands a couple body shots and Quarry ends with a flurry to seal the round in his favor.  Quarry's Round- 1-0  (6-5) Quarry

Round 10-  Quarry lands a nice hook.  Patterson lunges forward with a hook but misses.  Quarry is more active here and lands a real nice combination.  Floyd is curiously quiet in the last round of a close fight.  Patterson tries to steal the round by throwing a flurry at the bell.
Quarry's Round 1-0  (6-6) A Draw is my decision.

Judges Decision- 7-6 Quarry
                         5-5 even
                         6-6 even  A Majority Draw

I think this fight was judged very fairly.  A lot of times people talk about controversy and it keeps people interested, so that's o.k.  I could see how either fighter could win by maybe a point at most, but it was definitely a close fight that could have gone either way.  I wish I didn't score it a draw because it is boring and predictable, but I am not going to change my scores to become exciting.  This fight was a draw plain and simple to my eyes.  Jerry Quarry was just starting a great career that would involve another great fight against Floyd Patterson and another close decision.  Patterson was on the downside of his career, but still was a great fighter and will always be remembered as one of the true gentlemen of all time. I love his book Victory Over Myself, and think it is an all-time great read.  This fight was a true gem, although it still baffles me why Patterson would become so defensive in the final two rounds after dominating the middle of the fight. Here Spring and Fall collided and made the sweet science a little sweeter for one evening in Los Angeles.
