Quarry Vs Patterson II-Oct 28, 1967 L.A
This highly anticipated rematch took less then a year to put together due to the WBA Heavyweight Elimination Tournament.  This fight was a quarterfinal contest and the winner would face Thad Spencer, who had beaten Ernie Terrell in another quarterfinal.  Their first fight had been a draw, and fans of both fighters thought their man should have gotten the decision.  Jerry Quarry was a rising young star and was called America's best young heavyweight before the fight, although Joe Frazier fans might have had a bone to pick with that statement.  Quarry was 24-1-4 with 15 knockouts.  His only loss came to tough veteran Eddie Machen earlier in his career and he had just destroyed former top ten contender Billy Daniels in one round.  Floyd Patterson wanted one more shot at the title. He was 46-5-1 with 35 knockouts and clearly thought he could beat any of the fighters in this eight man tournament.  In his draw previously to Quarry he had one most of the rounds, but his faulty chin gave the big second round to Jerry.  Let's take a look at this rematch.  Scoring in California was as follows- 5 points maximum in a round. A 10-9 round would be 1-0 for the fighter and a 10-8 round would be 2-0 for a fighter.  An even round is scored 0 points for each fighter.

Here's the fight as I saw it.-Green are the round scores as I scored it, red is important text like a cut, great punch or knockdown.

Round 1- Quarry comes out throwing a big right, but missing.  Slow start to the fight as respect has been gained on both sides from the first fight.  They exchange a series of punches and Quarry finishes with a nice right.  Patterson lands another combination and follows with a good right hand.  Patterson using a nice right hand effectively here late in the round.  Patterson's Round- 1-0

Round 2- They start slow again this round.  Patterson again lands his sneaky right, but this time Quarry follows with a nice left hook.  Quarry is trying to lure Patterson into the corner and Patterson takes the bait.  Quarry lands a quick straight right, Patterson is down again in the second round!! He rises quickly and cleans off his own gloves, you can tell he's been on the canvas before.
Quarry's Round- 2-0  (2-1) Quarry

Round 3- Quarry with a couple nice shots. Patterson tries to get some steam, but Quarry looks very confident.  Patterson lands a glancing left as Quarry is throwing nice combinations.  Patterson looks confused as Quarry is doing all the good work.  Quarry's Round- 1-0  (3-1) Quarry

Round 4- Quarry with a digging body shot.  Patterson is now moving backward as he fires a series of lefts.  Quarry again retreats to the corner and Patterson follows aggressively.  Quarry is looking for a counter as Patterson swings wildly.  Quarry connects with a sharp right, Patterson falls to the canvas.  He rises quickly again, and seems more embarrassed then hurt.  Quarry fires some more shots as Floyd covers.  Quarry's Round- 2-0  (5-1) Quarry

Round 5- They measure each other at the start of the round.  Patterson lunges and misses his left hook.  Quarry digs to the body well and is still controlling the action.  Floyd just can't get started and is falling behind terribly.  Quarry's Round- 1-0  (6-1) Quarry

Round 6- Quarry lands a nice right to start the round.  Very slow pace again as Quarry seems to be tiring.  Quarry stuns Patterson with a big right and then follows to the body.  Patterson trying to fight back, but is hit with a combo at the bell.  Quarry's Round- 1-0  (7-1) Quarry

Round 7- Quarry trying once again to lure Patterson into the corner.  Floyd trying to get more aggressive, but the pace is very slow.  Patterson lands a nice right hand as Quarry is content to take this round of and play defense.  Patterson's Round- 1-0  (7-2) Quarry

Round 8- Nothing happening as the round begins.  Patterson drops home a right followed by another. Quarry is really slowing down now.  They exchange right hands as Patterson now appears to be gaining confidence.  Patterson's Round- 1-0  (7-3) Quarry

Round 9- Both fighters circling each other.  Not much action here as Quarry is on his toes boxing a bit.  Quarry lands a right as this is the worst round of either of their fights.  Patterson lands a quick right and Quarry counters with a shot at the bell.  Even Round 0-0  (7-3) Quarry

Round 10- Quarry is noticeably tired and Patterson is slower then a couple rounds before.  Patterson lands a nice right lead.  Floyd with another right as Quarry does nothing but cover and move this round.  Patterson controlling the action just by punching.  Patterson's Round 1-0  (7-4) Quarry

Round 11- Quarry throws a shot at the start of the round but quickly stops punching as Floyd lands a nice uppercut.  Patterson still more busy, although his punches lack steam by this point in the fight.  Patterson's Round by aggressiveness.  Patterson's Round 1-0  (7-5) Quarry

Round 12- They start out very measured as they are both worn out.  No punches landed the first minute of the round.  Patterson with a little combination as both men appear exhausted.  Patterson still throwing more, although landing little.  Patterson's Round 1-0  (7-6) Quarry is my decision

Judges Decisions- 6-6 Even
                          7-6 Quarry
7-6 Quarry    Majority decision for Jerry Quarry

This fight started great, but became a chess match as the rounds went on.  Quarry really landed almost all the damaging punches in the fight and Patterson won his rounds simply by throwing punches as Jerry was out of gas.  If this were a 15 round fight it would have gotten really interesting, but without a knockdown there was no way Floyd could comeback from so far behind.  Quarry would go to upset #1 contender Thad Spencer via 12th round knockout in the semi-final.  He then would battle Jimmy Ellis for the WBA Heavyweight Championship. Patterson would lose a controversial decision to Jimmy Ellis in Sweden the next year and would finish his career in 1972 with a loss to Muhammad Ali.  The first fight was better, but this fight still was engaging as it was very important to the future of the division.
