SIZE
Can exceed 30 cm but usually 15 cm.
INTERESTING FACTS
Tupong come from a family of marine Antarctic and Subantarctic fish.
They can tollerate temperatures from near freezing to over 25C.
Tupong can be transfurred directly from salt to fresh water.
MAINTENANCE OF CAPTIVE SPECIMENS
I have only kept some small immature specimans and this review is based on my experiance with those.
SUITABILITY FOR KEEPING IN CAPTIVITY
Advantages: Can tolerate cold or heated water, Can tolerate salt or fresh water, and Grows to a managable size. |
Disadvantages: Predatory, and Little information available on it's care. |
Suitable for experienced fishkeepers only.
AQUARIUM CONDITIONS
Due to it's size it would appreciate a 3 foot tank. Thick sand substrate and cover would make it feel more secure. Should have good filtration as it eats meat. Does not require heating. This fish is predatory so avoid keeping it with small fish.
AQUARIUM BEHAVIOR
The young fish I kept hid for most of the time, mainly emerging at feeding time. The skipped along the bottom and rested amongst cover. They rarely swim. I did not observed any territorialism but they did have a lot of room.
FEEDING HABITS
I had difficulty observing them feeding. They seemed to take frozen bloodworm as it settled onto the bottom of the tank. They seemed to be growing so they must have been eating something. I regularly dropped finely minced beef heart and blood worm into that tank for other fish.
