Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Gamma Psi Sigma Alumnae Chapter History

In 1967, seven Sigma educators met and decided to form a chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in the Bay City, Flint, and Saginaw areas. These women were: Velma Smith Bell, Henrietta Johnson, Virginia Jones, Theresa Leeke, Oena P. McCray, Idella Dyson White, and Alfredetta Vaughn. After fulfilling the requirements for organizing a chapter, Dr. Annie Lawrence, Grand Basileus of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., was invited to come and perform the ceremony that officially organized and chartered Gamma Psi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

For over 40 years, the members of Gamma Psi Sigma have worked untiringly, carrying out the mission of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. “to enhance the quality of life within the community,” in public service, leadership development and the education of youth through programs and activities.

Our major fundraising event is Rhomania, first held in 1970. Scholarships from this program have helped many students in the Bay City and Saginaw area attend institutions of higher learning. Gamma Psi Sigma has grown from seven charter members to over fifty members, and have nurtured many young ladies in the Saginaw, Midland, and Bay City areas. May we continue to let our Sigma light shine!
