Diagnosis
Home Up About Sagittal Our Story

Some visible symptoms are:

a ridge along the top of the head
a very protruding forehead
a narrow elongated head shape
no fontanelle on top of the head (babies usually have a soft spot, called the fontanelle, where the skull has not fully formed)

Your child may have all, some or none of these signs of the disorder. If you have done some research, you may have found stories about doctors misdiagnosing this condition, and therefore doing unnecessary surgeries. The information we have found is that this happened at some hospitals in the 1980's, where some surgeons diagnosed this condition based on the head shape or feeling the skull alone. Although an experienced pediatric neurosurgeon will say that he can diagnose sagittal synostosis just on inspection, he should order and x-ray or other type of imaging test such as a c-t scan. As with any other medical issue, ask for a second opinion if you feel that it would reassure you better. Although this surgery should not be delayed indefinitely, a couple days to get a second opinion is not likely to make a difference.
