Home Care

Normally, there is no special care required for your child once you return home, other than Tylenol (or a similar pain killer), that should be given according to the doctor's instructions as long as needed.

Your baby may also have been prescribed with an iron supplement, if he-she experienced significant blood loss or a transfusion. Ask your doctor if this is required before leaving the hospital.

You will not be able to restrict your baby's activities even if you try. He or she will do whatever he or she can, depending on age and level of development. What you can do is to ensure that your home and your child's other environments are safe. Here is a list of some safety tips (whether or not your child has any medical problem):

Gates should be placed at the top and bottom of all staircases. The bottom is necessary too, because your child will start climbing up the stairs long before he/she can safely come down them.
All electrical sockets should be blocked.
Use an approved car seat that is appropriate for your child's size, and ensure that it is properly installed.
Do not use rolling baby walkers.
Block the corners of any tables or other furniture.
Be sure that the baby's crib or basinet meets safety standards, and that the baby cannot roll or climb out of it.

If your baby does not yet roll around, it may be advisable to alternate the baby's sleeping position. Some doctor's believe that this has no effect on the future shape of the head, while others recommend it.

There are some rare cases when the doctor prescribes the use of helmets. If this is suggested for your child, its use is normally required almost 24-hours per day, taking it off only for bathing. Some doctors advocate the use of helmets in conjunction with surgery for sagittal synostosis, although the use of helmets is NOT a replacement for surgery for sagittal synostosis.
