Baby's Appearance After Surgery All hospitals have their own rules but most will allow the parents in the ICU as soon as he is out of surgery and his vitals are checked in ICU. You will likely only be allowed to stay for a brief few minutes, and may only be allowed in one at a time. Your admitting nurse should be able to give you the protocol for your hospital. Most hospitals only keep the babies in ICU for around 4 hours after this surgery, but some for a full day. Right after the surgery, your baby will have IV's in and will probable be attached to some monitoring equipment. This may look frightening, but it is routine for babies. For the period from 24 to 72 hours after the surgery, he or she will experience significant swelling of the head and upper body. This is when he'll look worst. Once the swelling subsides, your baby will look fine, and have a much more normal head shape than he had before. As soon as the general anesthetic wears off, you will notice your baby's personality coming though, and acting like the child you know. The Codeine, if you give it, will keep him a little drowsy and listless. He will sleep more than usual in the first 3 to 5 days after the surgery. He will act completely like himself within not later than a week. |
