Swelling

Swelling of the head and upper body generally occurs following this surgery. The swelling of the head is most significant, and the face can swell to the point where the baby is unable to open one or both eyes, for up to 24 hours. The swelling will develop around 24 hours after the surgery, peak between 48 and 72 hours after the surgery, and then subside. By the fourth day, the swelling should be gone.

Your baby may seem a little nervous at when he or she can't open his or her eyes. It is amazing how even young babies have learned to rely on their sight. You can soothe your baby by staying with him or her as much as possible, and bringing familiar toys that make noise or are fun and easy to handle.

If you can't stay at the hospital all of the time, you may consider bringing a tape with your voice singing a song or reading stories. Remember, your baby will sleep most of the time when the swelling is worst, and it will be over very quickly.
