There is is something very special about the film Anne of Green Gables. As a child, I could relate to the spitfire that was Anne Shirley and her need to romantize the little things in her life to make life seem less ordinary. She started out with only Katie, her imaginary friend on the other side of the mirror, her 'kindred spirit'. Anne eventually saw past her reflection and discovered that she could make real "bosom friends" if she only let them inside. She had such a beautiful way of expressing herself and though not everybody understood her right away, gradually people saw the wonderful person she was. She found her soulmates in her best friend, Diana Barry, and the love of her life, Gilbert Blythe. They taught her how to trust her heart. Kindred spirits are people that serve as our touchstone. They can be anybody in your life that accept everything about you and still love you for it. They are always there for you.

And so I've taken this philosophy to heart. I relate to Anne in that life can be a bit overwhelming, so it's nice to escape. By embracing the imagination and those who love us, I gather strength and a resolve to keep on. I don't want to sound too preachy, but I just think that really true friends are hard to come by these days. It's pointless to waste your time with people that put you down. If they just don't appreciate you for who or want to mold you into something you're not, then they are not worth it. The people that stick by you through it all (and vice versa) are the ones you hold onto. Fortunately, I have been blessed with such a friend in my life that I can truly call my kindred spirit.

Katie, Anne's first kindred spirit Gil, Anne's true love Miss Stacy, Anne's mentor Diana, Anne's best friend
