Van der Merwe at a French brothel

Reading the story of van der Merwe trying
to pay the French prostitute with South African rands reminded me of a
similar experience his father had during the sixties. He, too, visited
a French brothel and had an absolutely devestating time there - it was
so marvellous he stayed the whole night, which cost him 2000 francs.
But when he came to leave the madam of the brothel stuffed 10000 francs
into the top pocket of his safari suit as a "gesture of appreciation".
Old Van was immensely chuffed and on his return to Bapsfontein he told
his old pal
van Tonder about the experience.
As it happened van Tonder was leaving for
business in France and he obtained the address of the selfsame brothel.
And he too had a magnificent night there for 2000 francs. However
when he came to leave the madam waylaid him and stuffed a 500 franc note
into his top pocket "as a gesture of appreciation".
Van Tonder was mightily pissed off and
remonstrated with the madam that his friend Van had got 10000 francs and
why should he be satisfied with a measly 500?
"Ah monsieur", she exclaimed, "you friend
Van, he eez on zee television. You, monsieur, you are merely going
to be on zee postcards".
