Kino Makoto, or Lita as she is better known to those who watch the North American dub, is one of the taller Sailor Senshi, third after Setsuna Meiou (Sailor Pluto) and Haruka Ten'ou (Sailor Uranus). She is looked upon by others as a bully of sorts; when she first came to Juuban Junior High, where Ami and Usagi also went, people avoided her, having heard rumors that she was expelled for getting into fights.

However, Usagi had a knack for getting in trouble, and Makoto seemed to be in the right place at the right time, and saved her- twice. The first time, some bullies were ganging up on Usagi, and then again, when some people playing baseball aimed a bit too far outfield... In any case, Usagi was not afraid of her. Makoto, having a "cute lunch" was quickly befriended by Usagi.

In the anime, Zoisite's search for the first Rainbow Crystal carrier led him to a boy Makoto had started crushing on. He was transformed into a monster, and Makoto's powers of enhanced strength (even more so than her natural strength, brought on by martial arts) and control over thunder and lightning were revealed. Sailor Jupiter was awakened.

In the manga, however, there were no Rainbow Crystals, and Usagi befriended Makoto in the same manner. Many of her friends were surprised that she was daring enough to befriend someone who had such a horrible history, but Usagi didn't listen to them. Because Makoto's dream was to be a bride, when rumors started going around about a beautiful wedding dress shop that just opened, Usagi, Naru (Molly) and Makoto went to check it out. However, rumors were spreading that the place was haunted! The story was that the ghost seduced men that went near the store, and possessed girls who bought their bridal gowns there, intent on destroying the girl's marriage.

Makoto accompanied Ami and Usagi to the temple to discuss this issue, believing it was another attack from the Enemy. Makoto left, thinking that this stuff was 'over her head'. However, Rei had suspicions about Makoto; she told Usagi and Ami that they had found the next Senshi... At the wedding shop, the bridal ghost awakened, and posessed Motoki (Andrew) from the arcade as he was going home late from work. Makoto happened to be walking by and, having met Motoki earlier, was flustered when he said he had been waiting for her...

Mamoru (Darien) was nearby when Motoki-possessed was about to take Makoto's energy, and so warned Usagi in his Tuxedo Kamen guise. Usagi followed Tuxedo Kamen to the shop, and transformed into Sailor Moon. The ghost-bride revealed that all of the energy was drained from innocent grooms and other men that wandered near the store, and were placed inside mannequins. Usagi disguised herself as a groom to foil the ghost-bride, and then henshined into Sailor Moon. Sailors Mercury and Mars joined her, and when they told the ghost-bride that they wouldn't allow her to take advantage of young girl's hearts, Makoto arose from her stupor. She angrily hoisted the bride-ghost into the air, and the sigil of Jupiter appeared on her brow. She morphed into Sailor Jupiter and destroyed the ghost-bride as well as its controller, Nephrite.

In both the anime and the manga, Jupiter's previous incarnation, the Princess and Guardian of Jupiter, was an excellent ice skater. This talent seems to carry on into her next life as Makoto Kino, as she is a talented figure skater in addition to being loyal, strong, a great chef, and green-thumbed with all number of plants.

In the anime, Makoto's worst trait seems to be that every guy looks like her old boyfriend. This is something that people always poke fun about, but no real insight has ever been given to. In Another Story, the Sailor Moon video game for Super Famicom, based on the manga, Makoto's dream is to be a normal school girl, where she can date and fall in love without people worrying about her status as an outcasted bully.

In Sailor Moon S, Makoto says cooking only became a pasttime for her because it was the only "feminine" thing she was good at. Often accused of being a roughhousing tomboy, she is one of the more masculine members of the Senshi, second to Haruka Ten'ou (Sailor Uranus) only. However, after her heart crystal is stolen, she starts looking at her hobbies and life in a different manner, and is proud of her strength and feminity.

Makoto lives alone, because her parents died in an airplane crash when she was a small girl. Since then, her fear has always been of airplanes.

Her physical strength and loyalty are her best traits as Sailor Jupiter, the "Energetic Fighter" of Wood and Lightning. However, her strength has a damper-- the skirt she always has to wear! But she still uses the strength to help people, and is devoted to Usagi in all her incarnations.

She attends the same school as Usagi and Ami, but wears her old school's uniform because the new ones didn't fit. However, once the girls enter high school, Makoto wears the same uniform as Minako, Usagi, Haruka, Michiru, and Ami.
