In my experience designing webpages, webmasters and mistresses have to think of what the public will see when they view their page. Whether it's for business or personal pleasure, what your audience sees impacts things like feedback, business, and so forth. People have to cater their webpages to people with Macs and PCs; people with Netscape, Internet Explorer, and AOL; Frames-supporting browsers or non; Fast Internet connections, or ancient dialups... you get the picture. That all has to do with content. You can design your page specifically with HTML tags that all browsers recognize; you can make a frames and non-frames version of your page; a graphics-light, and a graphics-intensive page. It's all up to you. But what's not up to you is the color.

Around the world, different computer manufacturers include different video cards with different monitors. Some people can see 256 colors, while others can see over 16 million! It's amazing just to think there are that many colors in the world, let alone the web, so how do you make a website that's compliant to everyone, but still tasteful? It's hard.

Most people assume, or at least warn visitors of their site's requirements. That way, if someone needs to upgrade their browser, adjust their monitor settings, or switch to another computer entirely, they know. It's a pain though, to go through all that trouble just for one site. People say, "Why couldn't the webmaster have thought of this in advance?" Well, now you can.

The wonderful people at W3 (they introduce new coding to be used on the web-- new tags like <button> and <blink>) have come up with a list of colors where you can simply type <BODY BGCOLOR="color_name_here"> and it will appear as that color on ANYONE'S monitor. So they say, anyway. A lot of these colors aren't truly "WebSafe." So, in essence of staying WebSafe, YUM! offers the hexidecimal codes of all the colors, schemes (such as scents, flavors, objects, and images) that go with the colors, AND tips on improving your site's color capabilities. Have fun munchin'!

Here's how it works: Whenever you want to specify a color for something-- say a page/table background, a font color, or a border, use the following tag: <...COLOR="#XXXXXX"> where "..." is BORDER or BODY or something like that, and XXXXXX are numbers.

Now, be aware that if you type in the name, such as COLOR="red," it may appear perfectly red on your monitor, but just slightly screwy on someone else's. Nowadays, we all assume everyone's using the best monitor or browser, but us smart folk know that isn't true. That's why you type the hex code-- it'll show up the same color, regardless. BUT (and you knew it was coming) that's only true for colors that work like this: #AABBCC. Now, AA BB and CC don't necessarily have to be different from one another-- but A and A have to be the same, just as B and B do, and so do C and C. For example, the following hex code will show up just fine on ANYONE'S monitor: #FF00FF. For those of you that know hex code, that means you have a value of 255 reds, 0 greens, and 255 blues. That's because hexidecimals list their reds, greens, and blues in the following order: RRGGBB. R is Red, G is Green, and B is Blue. DUH. HOWEVER, if you decided you liked the color #EAB6FF, it wouldn't show up the same on your monitor as everyone else's. That's why ALL of the below colors have been converted to WEBSAFE HEXIDECIMAL FORMAT. Therefore, if you type in "<...COLOR="magenta"> and find that your "fuschia" text is the same color, it's because they have the same hex code.

If a color has FF in any field, that means that it has the highest intensity possible for that color-- meaning red orange will probably have FF in the first field (RRGGBB), but not as much blue. In fact, it's possible red orange will have NO blue in the last field (once again, RRGGBB). If a hex code has ALL the same letter (for example, #CCCCCC) then the color is GRAY, WHITE (#FFFFFF), or BLACK (#000000).

Now, say you have the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) values of a color, and want to change it to a web-safe Hex Code. Here's your mini-guide-- and remember, the only colors that are websafe are the ones that come in same-number pairs for the code. That means that for the Red Values (RR), the Green Values (GG) and the Blue Values (BB) which make up the Hex Code #RRGGBB, R and R have to be the same numbers, G and G have to be the same numbers, and B and B have to be the same numbers. You can't have something like E426F8. It's not web-safe, and it will probably look yucky on more than one person's computer. The most common hex values are listed below, along with their equivalent RGB values.

For example, #FF99CC has a Red Value of 255, a Green Value of 153, and a Blue Value of 204. It will look like this: this is the color.

If you browse through the color chart, you'll notice #FF99CC isn't on there-- even though it's a perfectly valid, web-safe color. This is the same for ANY proper combination of Hex/RGB Colors-- as long as you use the same number for each digit of the RGB values in the Hex Code.

Schemin' and Dreamin'

Coming up with color schemes and layout ideas from all of this can be taxing. So I've done it for you! If you want a page themed in "summer colors" then check out the "summer color" combinations. Knowing what Hex colors you plan on using can help you find images, and then maybe even a name for your new layout version!

If you've ever been to Scented Angels, then you might have an idea of whay I'm talking about-- for example, the colors red and white might make you think of a candy cane. I provide the colors red and white, with their respective hex codes, and have placed them in the 'winter colors' category. And you see the name 'Candy Cane,' and say, 'gee, MySiteTitle, version CandyCane sounds kinda cool!' And there you go.

Since SA only allows real scents and flavors, that means I can expand on that-- and use schemes that match characters (for example, Sailor Mars would be red, black, and violet), as well as seasons, holidays, and more. You can also make up your own "scheme" colors by looking at cosmetics, paint chips, Pantone color catalogs, fashion magazines, and other color resources!
