Oceana Economics

Oceana's economics is about the same as Earth in the later part of the 1800s. Oceana is a mostly capitalist system based upon magic and trade.

Economic Concepts

Oceana has many economic concepts that are very advanced for most fantasy or pseudo-midieval societies.

Oceana has the concept of shared risk and thus the stock company, and has had this concept for many centuries. It evolved roughly 100 years after the Second Expansion started. Initially it was shared risk for ships and trade voyages. Individuals would buy a share of a ship, settlement or trade goods. Many years later, after the creation of the Libary of ????, people were able to sponsor adventuring groups. This didn't catch on with local businesses like the tailor, baker, etc. which are still similar to the US and England circa pre-1820s. This concept of shared risk also lead to the limited liability company.

Capitialism got a real boost with the development of teleportation 50 years ago. There was a massive need for capital for building gates, and the concept already existed from experiances with ships and colonies.

Socialism, communism and such exist, mostly as theories. Magic has made capitalistic exploitation rare. Communism mostly exists in the form of kibbutz type farms, fishing co-ops and similar.

Insurance, both ship and personal, exist.

Bankruptcy laws exist and most people do not have to go to debtor's prison.
