The creatures that were transported to Oceana brought their own gods with them. When they arrived they generally continued with the worship of their ancestral gods. While on Oceana though they encountered new gods, and new ones that were obviously willing to show themselves to their worshipers. Essentially all creatures gave up their ancestrol gods within a generation of arriving, and shift to worshipping the gods of Oceana.
This section deals with the powers the various gods wield, and the areas they support or oppose. To use D&D terminology, their domains. There are literally hundreds of thousands of gods, but most of them are gods of a limited, specific place. Only the major gods are listed here. Players that wish to create a new god for the character can do so with approval and back story.
Each god is expected to have one or more domains, a portfolio of what they take of, a favored weapon based upon their portfolio, required feats and skills for their clerics and similar. This can include additional required classes to continue advancing as a cleric. Also some gods can have Divine Bards along with their normal clerics and cloistered clerics.
The names of the gods were mostly generated from the 7th Sanctum Name Generator. The god Agi Hammerthief comes from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Yuuki, the goddess of death comes from the web comic Sparkling Generaion Valkyrie Yuuki. Adoni / Elohim is Jewish.
The following changes are made to the standard domains from D&D Players Handbook to fit into Oceana. D&D domains that are replaced by Oceana domains are a change in terminology, not in spells and abilities of the D&D domain. Difference is that the replaced domain does not exist as an in-game concept.
Alignment Domains - There are no specific alignment gods. While the varous gods can each be given an alignment, there is no god of Good alignment, etc. As such, choose any god of the appropiate alignment to choose an alighnment domain.
Element Domains - There are no element gods. Earth, air, fire and water are replaced by organic ideas such as ocean or lakes, sky or weather, etc. Read the Oceana Domain list to see which domain replaces the 4 elemental domains.
Racial Domains - There are no racial gods per se. Some races have a penchant for certain gods, but most races worship a multitude of gods. Nor do any of the Gods claim to have created any of the races on Oceana.
Animal, Plant Domain - Read Oceana Domain list to see which domains replace the plant and animal domains.
Magic Domain - Replaced by the knowledge domain. Use a knowledge domain god to obtain D&D magic domain abilities.
Protection Domain - Replaced by War / Strength or Healing / Health.
How each god description is formatted.
God of description. This is the areas of normal life that the goddess controls. Who worships the particular god and why. Alignment, and notes on alignment. Domains their followers have access to and are forbidden to use. Favored weapon, and why. Required skills, feats or additional classes for clerics. Types of clerics, monks, bards, etc.
God of the Jews. Creator of the Universe, etc. Clerics have access to most domains. Known domains: fire, healing, sky, Does not have access to the following domains: animal, chaos, death, evil, Each town will often have a number of congregations. Each congregation is seperate, but there are a number of confederations of congregations that cover large parts of Oceana. Each confederation will have it's own series of courts, "Bin Det" to supplement civil courts. Favored weapon is the XXX. Clerics are known as Rabbis. Cloistered clerics are common instead of regular clerics. There are also Divine Bards who are refered to as Cantors.
God of dangerous tricks and mine disasters. Primarily a Dwarven god. Alignment is evil. See The Fifth Element by Terry Pratchett for details. Dwarves do not worship Agi Hammerthief. His clerics are outcasts and are forbidden in Dwarven territory. Favorite weapon: Pick.
God of administration, law, legal system and social order. Alignment is lawful. This is obediance to the law and lawfully chosen authorities. not to the requirement of justice per se. He is patron god of adminstrators and civil rulers. Favorite weapon: mace.
Goddess of the ocean & seas. Alignment is chaotic. Sailors and travelers by water make offerings before setting out. Favorite weapon: net & trident.
God of chaos, strife, disorder, war and death. Alignment is chaotic evil. This god likes to kill for the sake of killing.
God of justice, valor. Alignment is lawful good. Worshipped by Paladins. This god has Paladins, clerics and laity. The clerics are expected to occasionally accompany Paladins, and thus learn to fight. The church is trans-national.
Goddess of fresh water, lakes, rivers. Alignment is neutral.
Goddess of the moon. Alignment is lawful.
Goddess of wilderness, uninhabited lands, wild animals and hunting. Alignment is neutral to good. Worshipers are mostly Druids and Rangers. This Goddess supports limited hunting, preservtion of the wilderness and enviroment. Her Druids often own large amounts of land that they keep in a wild state. Closer to cities they will own open space to keep a green belt around settlements.
Goddess of domestic animals, husbandry, Alignment is chaotic good. Clerics are required to have skills in animal handling, animal husbandry and similar at start and as they advance. These skills are considered class skills.
God of knowledge, revealing of secrets, writing, history and teaching. Alignment is lawful because knowledge needs to be organized. All monks are worshippers of Fisumeme. This god has monks, clerics and cloistered clerics. Most clerics are actually cloistered clerics. There are also non-monks who worship Fisumeme. He is also often worshipped by wizards, especailly ones doing spell research. Well respected in Greek and Egyptian lands. Domains are: knowledge,
Goddess of secrets. Alignment is chaotic evil. Enemy of the god Fisumeme. The clerics of Krotay stay hidden. Her worship is banned, and only happens in secret. Clerics of this goddess must take the multi-class at start option to hide their cleric status.
Goddess of the hearth, home or city as home. Alignment is lawful. She is married to Ceboher. Clerics of Lowefiu very rarely adventure and thus are always cloistered clerics or adepts.
God of artifice, metals, metal working and mining. Alignment is good. Worshipped by smiths, miners and Dwarves. Occasionally worshipped by fighters as he is also the blacksmith and weapons maker for the gods. Favorite weapon is the hammer. .
God of travellers, trade and exploration. Alignment is neutral. Often worshipped by adventurers in general for safe travel and exploration. Also commonly worshipped by Bards. Domains are: travel, Favorite weapon is the staff. Most of the clerics of Ogefea are expected to spend some time exploring the uncivilized parts of the world. They are expected to find treasure and potential trade opportunities. to fulfill such roles, clerics are trained to fight. Clerics must take skills in trade, merchanting or navigation every other level. These are considered class skills. The Church of Ogefea is a trans-national church organization with branches in most port cities and larger towns. Clerics and cloistered clerics are both common in Ogefea's church.
Goddess of weather, storms, rain, and the sun. Alignment is chaotic good. Often worshipped by the Elves, but not exclusively Elven. Domains are: sun,
God of power through strength. Alignment is evil to lawful evil. Opposed by Didilea. Often worshipped by Orcs, Goblins, etc. Believers believe that might makes it right for them to rule over others.
God of wine, grapes, music and good times. Alignment is chaotic. On a mythological level, he is often in trouble with Ceboehr for rowdyness and parties. In his aspect of god of music he is worshipped by many Bards.
Goddess of War, Martial Strength, toughness. Alignment is good. Worshipped by primarly fighters, soldiers and similar. Domains are: war, protection. Favored weapon is: Battleaxe.
Goddess of healing, health, good fortune. Alignment good. Myth has it that she controls a tree that provides healing and even immortality for eating it's fruits. Temples are independent of each other, but do communicate with each other frequently.
God of creation of monsters. Alignment is chaotic evil. Generally not worshipped. The concept for this god comes from Harn Roleplaying System. This god creates small numbers of custom monsters to plague Oceana. Such monsters are not natureally part of the ecosystem, and generally do not have to fit into a long term niche.
Goddess of beer, brewing, rains and potion making. Alignment is chaotic good.
God of fishing, seafood, and other ocean provided foods. Alignment is chaotic good. Favorite weapon is the net & trident. Clerics have to have skills in fishing or other food gathering from the ocean plus small boat handling. These are considered class skills.
God of trickery. Alignment is chaotic evil. Domains are: Trickery,
Goddess of fruits, ediable tree products and forest growth. Alignment is neutral. Favorite weapon is the pike and others similar to pruning hooks.
Goddess of Luck, gambling and thievery. Alignment is chaotic. Often worshipped by rogues.
Goddess of death, the underworld and judge of the dead. Alignment is neutral. She is the collector of the slain.
