History Overview

The Norwegian's arrived on Oceana in 850 CE. This is the end of the pagan era on Earth, and the latter part of the Viking era.

It was fairly obvious from the night sky that this was no longer Earth. After a relatively short period of wandering and exploration the city of Rome was founded. It is said that the location for the new city were shown to leaders by the gods through visions.

The Norse were a very small group, but both a warrior raiding party and a colonization party. The Norwegians were

Initial Political Setup

The Norwegian's brought a number of new ideas to Oceana. These included the democratic aristocracy of early Norway, England and similar areas. They also brought with them the concept of feudalism of a sort. It is they that introduced the titles of Earl, Baron and such. The Norwegians introduced the concept of feudalism to Oceana. The earlier cultures had aristocrats, but not the ranking structure that is assoicated with feudalism. They were also new to Oceana, and admired at first. They were strong defenders of humans, and made quite a living raiding monsters for profit.

Population Growth

Early farming yields on Earth were on the order of 5:1 to as low as 2:1, depending upon the weather and luck. That is 5 units would be produced for every unit of grain planted, of which one unit of the harvest had to be saved for next years planting. This was typical of the Mediterranean and Europe up through the early middle ages. This is the type of agriculture that was brought to Oceana by the Legion. The Greeks and Egyptians brought similar agricultural technology with them to Oceana. This relatively low crop yield kept population growth down over the next few hundred years. Population growth was also limited by an on going war with the Kobolds during the second century on Oceana.

The Norwegians were obviously seafarers from the beginnig.

It wasn't until the late middle ages that the introduction of legumes (peas and clover) permitted much higher yields thru better crop rotation and soil treatment.
