Oceana is a primarily ocean planet. The land consists of islands of various sizes. The largest are about the size of Italy, while the smallest are mere specks. There are approximately 15,000 islands that are large enough to support at least a moderate sized village and that are known to exist. The known islands are spread out over an area roughly that of North America or Europe and north Africa. The northern most islands are roughly equal in location to the North Cape of Norway. The southern islands are roughly equal in location to Ethiopia in Africa.
Humans, and their allies the dwarves, elves, gnomes and nekojin occupy the eastern portion of the archipeligo. Literally the islands to the west are labeled "here be monsters". Large parts of the closer western island groups were human, dwarf or elven occupied over the past 1,500 years. Since then they have been over run with the fall of various governments. Humans do not know how far to the west the islands run. Nobody has returned to tell about it. The islands must run quite far west since there seems to be no end to the monters.
To the east of the archipeligo is open ocean. Nobody knows how wide it is since nobody has ever returned. It can not be all that large, probably between 3,000 and 5,000 miles of open ocean since the waves are not that high. Alternatively, there are large shallow spots that break up huge waves. The open ocean is known as "the whaling grounds" since the major activity in the open ocean is whaling.
The islands are generally divided up into groups, with basis of a group being a combination of physical closeness and political or cultural unity. The following groups are common knowledge for humans on Oceana. The listings cover the number, names and some of the sizes of the islands and groups of islands. There is some description of the islands the general climate. The larger politcal entities have seperate pages for political data. The Border Lands is the common designation of all the islands that are on the edge of human occupied islands. The Border Lands though are actually broken down into a variety of politcal groups. The Border Lands run from north to south in a rough arc. There are eleves, dwarves, humans, etc living in the area.
The eastern section at the rough location of North Carolina to Maryland is occupied by the various Greek descended colonies. This is in the wine & olive belt. The Dwarves occupy the lands directly to the north of the olive belt. To the northwest are the elves. Far to the south are the Egyptians.
The Dwarves extend from Maryland on north to southern edge of Maine. Their islands are more rocky and hilly. They share the islands with the Gnomes.
To the west of the Dwarves, but seperated by both a number of islands and open water are the Elves. The elves do not go as far south as the Dwarves though.
To the north of the Greeks are Elves. To the far west are the Border Lands.
Egypt analog - Located fairly far south with regards to civilized lands. It is one of the largest islands on Oceana. It is 800 miles long and about 80 miles wide. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with a flat river basin in the center. The river is navigiable, despite cataracts, 150 miles from the delta. The northern 50 miles of the island are all high mountains, roughly 10,000 tall. The area is essentially uninhabitable between terrain and monsters. The mountains on either side of the river occupy 10 miles each and are also between 5,000 feet at the southern end to merging into the northern range at 10,000 feet. This leaves an area 150 miles long and 10 miles wide for civilization to exist in. There is a warm current that runs across the southern edge of the island. This current leaves warm, moist air that flows up the river valley during part of the year to create the yearly flooding of the river valley.
Borderlands region. Consists of the Winterden Marches,
The Winterden Marches are a group of 9 islands ruled nominially ruled over by the Marquis of Winterden. The Winterden Marches are theoretically subservient to the King of Erum, but has essentially been independent since the grant was issued 75 years ago. There are 9 islands in the Marches. The Marquis holds court on the eastern most island, Lucygus in the small city of Eastacre. All ships bringing people or goods to the Marches must stop in Eastacre on Lucygus and pay taxes. As such there are no outside ships that visit the other islands. The other two islands that are inhabited are Bythacica and Bycrest. .
