Spire is a magical tech planet. Most non-magical technology was lost shortly after settlement. Technology on Spire is an unusual mixture of 20th, and much earlier technologies.
Food production: Spire has the mould-board plow. There is also a well-developed system of crop rotation and fertilization using compost and wastes. They have maintained the horse collar so horses pull plows not men. The farm hardware is 17th century, or basically pre-steam age. The crop rotation and plant breeding is much later period. Irrigation is known of, but not usually needed. Since continual light spells can not be used to grow food, above ground land tends to be used primarily for crops, including forestry products.
Spire has the spinning wheel instead of the drop spindle so that wool, flax and cotton production is relatively easily turned into yarns.
Spire knows about steam power, but it is used very rarely. It is too expensive for general use due to the lack of fuels. The technology tablets have extensive information about steam power such as turbines, engines and boilers. Most of this technology is not feasible to implement.
There is limited gunpowder and guns. Magic has made guns somewhat redundant. The high cost of working metals has basically eliminated cannons. Any weapon with a lot of metal is very expensive, thus keeping guns and even swords in limited demand. Magic smiths though have found a way to create swords, axes and such implements made of metal that does not break or need sharpening. For some reason, this does not work on guns or anything that uses gunpowder. General weapons technology is that of pre-gunpowder Europe, except for actual firearms. Firearms are late 20th century including smokeless powder and cartridges. Firearms are very expensive though.. Magic has permitted flight in limited amounts so that tactics and strategies are more in line with late 20th century rather than the Middle Ages. Given the time between the advent of magical flight and loss of contact with Earth, all aerial tactics and responses are newly discovered.
Communications is mostly pre-telegraph except for magical based mobile phone for the rich and powerful. Semaphore towers exist in many parts of Spire, but the various networks do not all connect. Money, geography and politics limit semaphore towers. Some places are too inhospitable to maintain towers, or too expensive. Paper and the printing press are fairly common, but printing presses are all hand-powered presses. While presses are common, production runs are small due the labor needed. Paper is expensive due to energy and material costs. Wood for paper is scarce due to religious restrictions on harvesting.
Spire has limited amounts of energy sources. There is no coal or oil on the planet, and very limited amount of peat. Religious law limits the use of wood and charcoal to prevent deforestation of the planet. Waterpower is used extensively where possible. Wind power is used extensively on the edges of Spire and in the highlands. Magic has had a unique impact on power generation. There is the rotation spell that will cause any object to rotate in place at a relatively slow rate of speed. The object does not need bearings or other support once it is started. The other major spell is continual light. The use of the continual light spell is ubiquitous. While it still costs a lot of money to cast a continual light spell on an object, the spell has been in use for so long that everybody has a continual light stick or other small object with continual light cast on it. Such magical items are sold for only 10 times the cost of a lantern because there are so many already out there. Governments and temples have found it cheaper to sell the small sticks for cheap than to have people steal them. The use of oil, candles or similar is done by the rich as a means of showing off. Continual light spells will NOT permit the growth of food crops underground, the light seems to be missing some component need for plant growth.
Concrete or cement is very rare due to the energy needed to produce it. Stone, brick or clay construction is very common. Wood is used sparingly, except that in the south, bamboo is used extensively due to its fast growing nature. Bamboo is a major trade item with the north.
Transportation on Spire is basically 18th century plus wooden railroads. There are horses, canals, Roman style major roads and carriages.
Aside from weaponry, Spire has magic to add to the military equation. This includes flying units such as brooms, carpets and individuals. Maneuver warfare is common since there is plenty of room to practice it. Siege warfare is an art form and includes tunneling. Fortifications take into account the existence of aerial units. Horses, chariots and such are important.
