CURRENT TOURNAMENTS:

First Anniversary Tournament

GENERAL GUIDELINES

For most of these online tournaments, you will need to be a member of the CS2 Player Database. You can join here or join when you sign up for a tournament.

First, you apply for the tournament by e-mailing the tournament director. When you apply for a tournament, make sure you'll be open sometime during the rounds specified; otherwise, you may have to forfeit a game.

Once registration closes, the TD will send everyone the general rules of the tournament and the initial pairings. If there is an odd number of participants, a bye will be issued. It is your and your opponent's responsibility to both send the results of the game to the TD (if the results do not match, there will be an investigation...). These include order of deaths and final HP's of the survivors.

Everyone should keep track of everybody's HP after every turn. This way, if there is a drop (not a quit), the game can be resumed (the HP of the match will differ from what the computer says when you continue, but it can work). If a player leaves the game without being dropped (due to computer crashes and lag and online [stuff] like that), he/she gets an automatic zero HP during 1 on 1 and FFA matches (during teams, both players receive zero, so make sure you can make it)!

After first round results are reported, second round pairings will be made (see formats). This will go on and on until the tournament ends.

FORMATS

Swiss: My favorite format. First round pairings are completely random. Each player receives two scores, win points and differential. A player receives two win points for a regular win or for a bye, one for a tie, and zero for a loss. Differential is used only as a tie breaker for win points in determining rank. It is calculated as one point for each HP remaining at the end of the game.

Thus a player who wins a game with 35 HP remaining gets a score of 2(+35). His/her opponent would receive a score of 0(-35) for that game. A team of two players whose characters both survive with HP's of 15 and 10 receives a score of 2(+25), and the opposing team receives a score of 0(-25) for that game.

Ties count as 1(0) for each player. Byes count for 2(0). Forfeits count for 2(+30) and 0(-30) in most cases, but remember that quitting is not a strategic option!

After one round, the players are ranked according to score, and the top player plays the second player, and so on. (Odd-number of players/teams results in bye for last place) After a certain number of rounds, the top two ranked in the tournament may play a final confrontation to determine the winner.

Round-robin: A format in which the players form smaller groups of players or teams, and the players/teams play against all the others in the group. Only the best records advance to an elimination round. Scoring varies.

Elimination: A format in which a player or team that loses a certain number of games is eliminated from the tournament. Scoring doesn't matter as much.

HOW RATINGS WORK

Tournaments allow you to maintain an ELO rating. This number starts at 1500 and goes up for wins and goes down for losses. The better your rating, the better a player you're considered. So if you play an opponent with a much higher rating, your rating will rise more. In contrast, if you play an opponent with a much lower rating, your rating is unlikely to raise by much, if at all. However, you will never lose ratings points for a loss.

TOURNAMENT INFO STUFF

Dates: These are the dates during which the tournament will take place. Wow, surprise!
TD: Tournament director. This dude has complete control over decisions on how to run the tournament.
