Back some thousand years ago
There were some Spaniards who came
And they settled that land way down south
Latin America is now its name
With them came some bedraggled slaves
Who brought their very own beats
All the way over from Africa
Which started a brand new streak
Music was a way to pass the time
To turn away from what was real
That you were forced to do manual labor
With no pay; an unfair deal
So they took their beat and drums
And expanded on what they had
Till they had many different types
And none sounded all that bad
From Shuar music to Salsa
And in Brazil there was Choro
While Andean Folk music came about
Argentina came up with Tango
They used all kinds of instruments
From guitars to flutes to drums
And for the women who could not sing
They could always do a background hum
And the music came from their hearts
Their very souls put in
Changed into different words
How they felt; how theyve been
You see, music is a language
One understands or does not
And until you really appreciate it
Youre really just like a tot
