The Bane of Fenris

The wulf is a legendary evil spirit that roamed the wastes of Fenris and turned space wolves into blood thirsting monsters. It is said that the lord of the 13th. space wolf company chose the wulf for his banner and wore a wulf's pelt as cloak. His name has been lost in the mist of ages but it is said that no man could stand against him and that he could even master the curse of the Wulf. No one will ever know the truth. Some say his arrogance was his downfall. The 13th. company disappeared without trace in the chaos maelstrom. To this day the space wolves regard the number 13 as being cursed with bad luck and a sign of evil.

Well, the 13th. company are not lost in space - they've turned renegade! And their arch enemies are the space wolves! For everybody knows what the Wulf really is - a werewolf !

During the Heresy, the 13th. company fought at the head of the spacewolves attack on Prospero in an attempt to wipe out the traitor chapter of the Thousand Sons and their Primarch, Magnus the Red. Leaving their their home planet, Prospero, the Thousand Sons, with the 13th. Company hot on their heels, fled to the maelstrom and have remained there ever since. The 13th. company, their geneseed already partly corrupted with the curse of the Wulf, were easy prey and a welcome addition to the powers of chaos. Although thousands of years have passed and the Bane have taken part on several Black crusades, the Thousand Son's have never forgiven them for their betrayal on Prospero and absolutely refuse to fight along side them.

Most ironically the space wolves still recruit troops for the Bane. Any new space wolves recruits who fall foul of the curse of the Wulf during their training are welcomed into the Bane with open arms.

Chapter Name : Bane of Fenris

Home Planet : Zahnsybaa

Top Dog: Lycan Garawulf

Lycan is a conversion of Logan Grimnar - I cut the wolf's head off and stuck a fenris wolf's head on top of the figure. I then used green stuff to make the wolfs mane to cover up logan's face and hide the join between the cloak and the mane. I exchanged the bolter arm for a power claw and filed off all symbols of the imperium. Spikes have been added to the shoulder pads and wolves heads stuck to the leg shields - the wolves heads were cut from warmaster miniatures.

1st Champion : Baris Lofkrall

Baris is a conversion of Ragnar Schwarzmane. Again I replaced the head with that of a fenris wolf. I replaced the back pack with a chaos standard. Again I used green stuff to fill in the mane around the neck.

Standard Bearer: Therian Zahn

Therian is a converted Wolfspriest. I filed off all imperium markings, cut off the crozius arcanum and replaced it with a standard. It's hard to see but he also has a nice necklace of wolves teeth.
The almost finished model After varnishing the banner was added

The banner of the Bane of Fenris legion is a double headed werewolf with blood dripping from it's mouth on a star burst background. I make my own banners. I usually take a couple of chaos and work these together using paint shop pro until I get what I wanted. The banner is then copied. This copy is mirrored, to get the reverse side of the banner, and rotated 180 degrees so that it's upside down. I then put this second image on top of theoriginal image so thet when I print it out I simply have to fold it around the banner pole and glue it together. Printing
can take its time - you have to experiment with it until they print at the right size. I suggest you do this experimenting with the printer set for black and white and make sure the image background is pure white - you'll save colour ink. Also only set your printer to the finest resolution once you're ready for the colour print. Don't forget this! The print resolution makes a hell of a difference to the results. Once mounted on the banner pole, you can make holes in it for gun shots, tear it, bend it or whatever. I like to singe it with a match. Be careful not to set fire to it! You don't need to hold the banner directly in the flame, about 4" above it is enough to give the edges of the banner a nice brownish colour. Now you can varnish it.

I Converted some fenris wolves to half chaos marine, half wolf. I even found some space wolves that I could use straight out of the box. I just swapped their backpacks for the chaos equivalent. I used the space wolves sprue for minor conversions to other chaos marines.

Here are the finished models:

As to what god they'd follow - well up till now I've played undivided chaos. I suppose as they're so bloodthirsty, they could also be Khorne. That would make a good conversion - a bloodthirster with a wolf's head.

Here are some pictures of Lycan's mobile HQ landraider
This thing took me a week to put together. The inside was fully painted before assembly- including skeleton, torn up marine carcass, trophy heads and machine daemon. I wanted the front of this thing to look like the open jaws of a wolf when the ramp drops down. It was a bit diffucult to get it right because of the angle of the ramp when it's closed and the protruding teeth of the bottom jaw. The inside of the lower ramp has teeth too and both lower and upper parts of the ramp will be painted a throaty red when it's finished. The wolfy bits are from a sawn up SPAWN figure. I also contemplated putting a crushed marine in the right hand claw but my wife said it was a bit too much. The green filler is milliput dual component filler. To make up for the main missing bolters I replaced the laser eyes with crusader bolter units. The lascannon barrels were replaced with the chaos equivalent.

The bodywork will be finished in tin bitz with the green filler coloured grey and white to give the effect of wolf's fur.

Here's a not very clear picture of the inside:
