A Landspeeder Base

Recognise any of it. This landspeeder base started life as the styropor packing from two GW necromunda gang boxes. Glue the two styropor pieces together so that they form a solid blockhouse. There is no need to cut out doors or windows. The deck of the base is a plastic card from an old computer magazine card. I chose it because it seemed to have the right pattern for a steel deck but you could use styropor sheet and paint it like concrete.I simply glued this on top. The piping is simply some straws cut to size. The radar dome is the top off a firework rocket that I found lying in the street after New Year 2000. The doors are made of cardboard from a cornflakes packet, painted black and dry brushed with boltgun metal. Be careful not to get the cardboard too wet while painting otherwise it will warp. The steps are cut from sheet styropor. The ventilators on the side are bits from a surprise egg toy. The four sonar guidance modules on the corners are rubber stoppers from old syringes (no I'm not a junky; my son is handicapped and needs the syringes. These also come in handy for mixing paints).

So that's basically it. I cut a card base to any shape you care to choose and strengthened it with a layer of builder's plaster. I gave the styropor a thin plaster wash just to cover up the styropor bubbles and filled in the join with plaster .Then everything got a coat of paint. I used ordinary grey emulsion for the block house and gave it a black ink wash for weathering. The deck was painted black and dry brushed with boltgun metal. The base was first painted green and then covered with static grass. I did this by applying lime to the base with a brush and then shaking the static grass, using a fine sieve like you use for sifting flour, over the base. Don't cheat here, if you want to cover things properly use the static grass abundantly. Let this dry , shake off the excess static grass and put it back in the container.

You can add foliage using iceland moss or flock and stones as you like.
