The Senzu Garden / Temple 'O P0P0
Mr. Popo can resemble a large quantity of other objects and people. Of course, the most obvious thing that Mr. Popo resembles is a slave, or a genie. This is best described my a good friend of mine (although I don't think he knows I exist..)
Akira Toriyama wasn’t making fun of black people at all when he came up with the character concept that is Mr. Popo: a black man with large lips, a blank stare, and an intense devotion to an obviously superior being (Kami). Hell, Akira Toriyama breaks all sorts of boundaries by giving Mr. Popo a flying carpet and a turban, which is much better than, say, a spear and a bizarre African mask. Personally, I would have made him speak Swahili, smoke crack, and eat fried chicken, but I wasn’t the one picking the stereotypes, was I? ~Mike Payne
I certainly can't disagree with him there!
"Why the hell would Japan put American stereotypes of slaves in with a cartoon show," you ask? Well, lets put it this way: some questions are meant to go un-answered. Send us your ideas and pictures for this page.
