Chapter 1
----------------------------
Sunlight shone directly onto Li Syaoran’s face, bright enough to disturb him from his deep slumber. Groaning loudly, he raised his hand to block the sunlight from reaching his eyes but that was still not enough. Syaoran stayed in that position for a few more minutes, with his left hand covering both his eyes, until he could bear it no longer. Thinking to shut the binds that were on his windows, he turned onto his left and tried to reach for the binds with his right hand, only to reach for nothing and landed on the ground in a heap.
Dazed, Syaoran remained still and opened his eyes to determine which part of his room he was. So I’ve fallen from a bench... Syaoran thought dimly and then a second later, his eyes widened when his surroundings had sunk into his mind. What on earth am I doing in the park? He scratched the back of his head and thought hard.
Noticing that passers-by in the park had turned to look at him oddly, he scowled darkly at them and sat on the bench instead of on the ground. Crossing his arms in front of his chest, he began his thinking again. So first I was at café from morning from morning till night... Then where did I go? Oh! The King Penguin Park! But how did I end up asleep on the bench? I did not remember how...
“Forget it,” Syaoran muttered. “I still have to find her before I can go back to Hong Kong.”
Syaoran reached into his check pocket for the photograph of the girl he was ordered to find and found that his pocket was empty! He muttered a curse and started searching all his pockets to find for the only photograph that would lead him to his target. Another curse. Where is the photograph? I really remembered putting it in the pocket!
With a sigh, he gave up his search, knowing full well that there wasn’t any chance of him recovering the picture of the girl he had to bring back to Hong Kong. Well, at least I remember her face... Syaoran tried recalling how the girl look like and he realized with horror that he actually has no inkling of how she looked like anymore! But I do remember looking at her picture! Now that I have mentioned it, I have forgotten her name too! Why?!
“It’s as if I am suffering from a memory loss or something…” Syaoran muttered as he stood up and turned to leave the part, still aware of the curious glances that were on him. Unable to stand it any longer as it gave him creeps, he shouted loud enough for everyone in Tomoeda district to hear, “Mind your own business!” Then he started his short journey home.
“I’m home,” Syaoran announced when he reached home as he shrugged off his green jacket. “Wei-san, did anyone called when I was gone?”
“Yes, Syaoran-sama. Li-sama called once while you were out,” Wei, Syaoran’s fatherly butler, answered as he took away his master’s jacket. “It’s regarding you attending lessons in Tomoeda High School.”
Syaoran was in the process of entering his room when he had his answer and he stopped walked instantly for he thought that he had heard wrongly. Turning around, Syaoran asked again, “Did I hear something about me attending some lessons in some school?”
Wei nodded, a smile visible on his face. He still hasn’t overcome his fear of girls in school has he? Our Syaoran-sama is so terrified of girls who couldn’t seem to stop chasing after him... “Yes, Syaoran-sama. You have heard it right. Li-sama has arranged for you to attend school at Tomoeda High in hopes of completing your mission.”
The mission would not be easy any longer, considering that I have lost the girl’s picture and forgotten her name... but I couldn’t tell all these to Wei-san... He is not supposed to know anything about the mission that I have to complete, Syaoran thought sadly though his face remained expressionless. “Things are getting complicated,” Syaoran remarked as he entered his room. “More complication that it should be.”
“I am sure you will find a way out soon, Syaoran-sama,” Wei assured. “Li-sama did say that you will be one step closer to your mission when you attend lessons in Tomoeda High.”
Syaoran’s muffled voice came through the door of his room, “I am looking forward to the peace that will come after this entire mission.”
Wei chuckled in the living room with Syaoran’s jacket still in his hands, “Typical of Syaoran-sama to dislike missions, especially it involves girls.” Speaking a little louder so that Syaoran could hear him in his room, “Syaoran-sama, school starts at eight sharp tomorrow morning!”
“Whatever,” came Syaoran’s muffled reply.

The next morning…
Syaoran leaned against the wall of the corridor outside his ‘new’ classroom and waited for the teacher’s signal to enter. This is taking forever…Syaoran thought darkly as he shifted from foot to foot, trying to find a comfortable position. He looked down at his uniform, which consists of a white long sleeved top, a dark blue jacket with golden buttons and long black pants, and then he heard it.
“We have a new transfer student from Hong Kong,” Mizuki-sensei announced. “His name is Li Syaoran. Let’s welcome him shall we?”
Syaoran slide open the door to the classroom and entered when the class erupted into thunderous applause and squeals from the girls in the class. If he was started by the sudden commotion, his expressionless face did not betray his emotions. He stood by the Mizuki-sensei’s side while she made the introductions on his behalf as he scanned the classroom, noticing that all the girls were looking at him with awe and stars in their eyes.
All except one.
His eyes caught sight of a girl with short auburn hair at the far end right at the corner of the classroom. Instead of gawking at him like what all the rest of the girls were doing, she was staring out of the windows beside her with a bored expression on her face. Then their eyes met when she turned her attention back to the class and Syaoran was shocked by a wave of familiarity between them. It was as if Syaoran had met her somewhere before but he could not fathom where.
“Now…” Mizuki-sensei started, interrupting Syaoran’s train of thoughts. “Please take a seat beside Hiiragizawa. That will be your permanent seat unless there is a change in the seating plan. Hiiragizawa please raise your hand.”
Syaoran scanned the classroom and saw that two people had raised their hands, a look of bewilderment on their faces. One of them was a guy and the other was the girl Syaoran had noticed earlier on. “Erm… sensei?” Syaoran asked. “I assume there are two Hiiragizawas in this class?”
Mizuki-sensei smiled sheepishly, “I forgot about that. Hiiragizawa Sakura, please raise your hand for Li-kun to verify.”
The girl raised up her hand reluctantly, a hint of annoyance on her face as Syaoran neared her. Syaoran said nothing and sat down on his seat, staring at her. “Have we met before?”
Sakura seemed to frozen at the spot instantly and Syaoran felt a tap on his right shoulder. He turned around to face the person and found Hiiragizawa, the other person who raised his hand just now, glaring at him coolly behind the rim of his spectacles. “Don’t you dare try to pick on Sakura. I am warning you right now,” Hiiragizawa warned.
“Onii-chan!” Sakura protested. “All he did was just asking me a simple question! And the answer is no, I haven’t met you before. You must have mistaken me for someone else.”
Syaoran frowned, something is fishy around here… “So Sakura, this is your brother?” he asked, pointing to the guy at his right, who was still fuming at him.
Hiiragizawa slammed his hands on his table, thus earning the curious glances from his classmates as well as Mizuki-sensei. “You do not have the permission to call Sakura by her name! Absolutely no permission.”
“Hiiragizawa Eriol!” Mizuki-sensei warned. “No fighting in class.”
“Yes, sensei. I was just reminding our new transfer student here manners,” came the taunting reply.
Ignoring Eriol, Syaoran asked again, “He’s your brother?”
Sakura nodded her head and made a funny face at Eriol, who returned her with an icy glare. Syaoran looked at the noisy pair Hiiragizawa and sighed. Looks like I don’t even have peace in school... Just my luck! Wait till I find that girl I am supposed to bring back to Hong Kong...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So… Syaoran had no recollection of the girl he was to find. And who is this Hiiragizawa Eriol and Hiiragizawa Sakura? Stay tuned to the next chapter of When Dreams Failed to find out.
