When Dreams Failed
By: Sakura aka Michelle
Chapter 2
----------------------------
Hiiragizawa Sakura yawned again as the lessons went on. She rubbed the sleepiness away from her eyes and tried to pay attention to what Mizuki-sensei was teaching them but to no avail; she still felt as if she had not slept for years. It must have been yesterday night… Sakura thought as she yawned again.
“Not getting enough sleep?” A voice whispered on her right. She turned her head drowsily to find out who was talking to her and found a pair of ember eyes looking at her with concern.
“Perhaps,” Sakura answered him and tried to stifle a yawn. “It seems that I’ve been lacking sleep lately and I really wonder why.”
“Hiiragizawa Sakura! Li Syaoran!” Mizuki-sensei suddenly shouted from the front of the class while she was writing something down on the blackboard and the two of them hurriedly stood up from their seats. “Why are the two of you talking in my class? Stand outside the classroom, the both of you.”
Sakura sighed and dragged her feet outside the classroom while she muttered to herself, “This is the third time this week I was caught…”
“Third time?” Syaoran asked as he caught up with her outside the classroom. “You are always lack of sleep?”
Laughing, Sakura answered, “It would seem so. I work for a famous modeling company everyday at night till dawn. That is the only time I am free to work. I guess that is why I am so tired everyday.”
“Which modeling company operates at night? That’s so uncanny,” Syaoran commented as he stared at Sakura suspiciously. “Are you sure you are telling me the truth?”
Leaning against the wall with another sigh, Sakura played with the pleats of her skirt, unwilling to meet Syaoran in the eyes. Her only response to his question was to smile and continue staring outside of the window that was a few feet away from her. She took a sudden interest in observing the white fluffy clouds float by.
“The world is so complicated nowadays…” Sakura finally spoke up after long moments of silence in the hallway outside the classroom. “I feel so suffocated,” she added with a sigh and shut her eyes tightly.
Syaoran was about to ask her what she meant by that statement when he was interrupted by the ringing of the school bell which signaled the end of their last lesson for the day. Then Mizuki-sensei walked out of the classroom and stared at the both of them with an expression that Syaoran interpreted as concern. Of course she should be concerned about Sakura! She has been overworking herself!
“Sakura-chan,” Mizuki-sensei called and Sakura turned to face her. “I think it would be best if you stop what you are doing. It’s just so…”
“I know what you are trying to tell me,” Sakura replied with a sad smile. “But still, I have to do it. It’s a job that I cannot reject. This is my responsibility.”
Mizuki-sensei mirrored Sakura’s expression. “Just remember to be careful. I don’t wish for you to be hurt.”
“Is Sakura doing something dangerous?” Syaoran interrupted and the ladies paused to look at him as if they had forgotten that he was present and listening attentively to their conversation.
Mizuki-sensei laughed and replied him with a cheerful voice, “What are you talking about? I am only a little worried about Sakura’s health.”
“Then what was the dangerous thing the two of you were talking about just now?” he asked again, determined to get an answer from them.
Just then, Eriol walked out of the classroom, frowning at the trio who were gathered outside. He passed Sakura her bag while he told Mizuki-sensei, “Kaho, there’s no need to answer him. He doesn’t need to know.”
“There is no need to hide anything from him, isn’t it?” Kaho asked as she ignored Syaoran’s incredulous stare. “I mean… there’s no harm in telling him.”
Eriol shook his head and turned all his attention onto Syaoran as he told him menacingly while grabbing a fistful of Syaoran’s shirt, “You had better not mess with us. We are no fools and we don’t know what really made you come here all the way from Hong Kong all of a sudden. What I suggest to you now is to pack your luggage and go back to where you came from!”
“Onii-chan, Syaoran-kun meant no harm,” Sakura insisted and tried to pry Eriol away from Syaoran. “He was just concerned about me.”
“You are calling this jerk by his name?” Eriol bellowed angrily as he released Syaoran, turning his anger full forced on Sakura who shrank back. “You are talking back at me to protect this jerk? Have you lost your mind?”
Kaho pushed Sakura behind her and tried to calm Eriol down. “Eriol, your anger is showing and you are scaring Sakura. I know you meant Sakura well but what she said also made some sense, don’t you agree?”
Eriol took a deep breathe and nodded his head reluctantly, “I know and I still think it is best for Sakura to quit being a model. It is emotionally and physically draining.”
“So this is what all of you are talking about?” Syaoran asked. “The modeling thing?”
Kaho nodded her head, “Of course. What else can we be talking about besides Sakura’s job? By taking up this modeling job, Sakura is depriving herself of her much needed sleep. She barely sleeps for two hours everyday.”
“Let’s just go home shall we?” Sakura asked aloud, interrupting their conversation. “This conversation is so meaningless. I’ll continue with my job for as long as I want so all of you can quit discussing this topic as if you are taking the job yourself. I told you lots of times that I can manage it and I will.”
“I agree with Sakura on that,” Kaho said and turned to Syaoran. “Would you like to come to our place for dinner? I would like to use that as an apology on behalf of Eriol’s for having that nasty behaviour towards you.”
Syaoran laughed and tried to reject her offer, “It’s all right. I would not take his behaviour into heart. I’m afraid that I have to turn down your offer.”
“I insist!” Kaho exclaimed and turned to Eriol for help but he just ignored her totally. She then turned to Sakura who noticed her meaning almost immediately. “What do you think, Sakura?”
“I think that would be a great idea,” Sakura said, ignoring the angry stares that Eriol was giving her. “Besides, it would be a pity if you don’t taste my sister-in-law’s dishes. They are fabulous.”
“Sister-in-law?” Syaoran asked curiously and suddenly an answer flashed across his mind as he gaped at Kaho openly. “You don’t mean Mizuki-sensei, do you?”
Sakura nodded as she led the party away from the hallway, “Kaho is a very good cook. I assure you that you will surely ask for second helpings!”
Kaho laughed and waved a hand at her, “You are embarrassing me, Sakura-chan.”
Eriol trailed behind the trio with a murderous expression on his face targeted on Syaoran. It seemed that he has forgotten what has happened yesterday. I wondered what Sakura has done to him but it is still best that he cannot remember her. I dread to see what will happen next... Eriol sighed and stared at Sakura, who was laughing at something Syaoran had said. It has been a long time since I last saw her smile. I hope all these will work out well in the end.
