Chapter Five: Only Time

"How do I look?" Li asked Wei and Meilin.

It was the night of the dance and in a few minutes he was going to show up at the school with Sakura and he would have to find a way to tell her the truth.

"Like a dream," Meilin sighed.

"Very handsome," Wei complemented.

Li was wearing a dark green tuxedo with cherry blossoms and peonies in his front pocket.

"Good enough for Sakura?" Li questioned.

"Of course you are," Meilin assured. "Now hurry up before your late meeting the woman of your dreams!"

"Don't you have to go find your date too?" Li asked Meilin.

"Me? I don't have a date. I'm just going with my friends and I'm not the one who's keeping someone very special waiting," Meilin pointed out.

Li blushed and turned away. " Is the limo ready Wei?"

"Yes Master Li," Wei answered opening the door for him.

"Wish me luck," Li commented.

"Wait Li!" Meilin shouted. She ran into the kitchen and got something from the refrigerator. "Here," Meilin handed Li a bouquet of roses. " Give those to Sakura."

"Thanks Meilin," Li smiled.

After Li left Meilin sighed, Your going to make some girl very happy Li Showran.

"Hey squirt hurry up!" Tori yelled up the stairs.

"Could you get the door Tori?" Sakura yelled back.

Before Li could ring the door bell Tori opened the door. " Get inside Kid Sakura's not done yet."

"Still?" Li asked.

"Yeah," Tori replied, "They've been up there for hours."

"They?" Li questioned.

"Madison and Sakura. They've been busy since early this afternoon," Tori said sitting down on the couch.

"Presenting Sakura Avalon," Madison came down stair and announced. She pushed a button on the stereo and music turned on. Li and Tori both stood up.

Sakura walked down the stairs and into the room. Li and Tori's eyes bulged out and their jaws dropped down to the floor. The flowers in Li's hand dropped onto the ground.

"So guys say something," Madison urged.

"Uh," Li stammered.

Sakura was radiating. She hair was laced with cherry blossoms and wavy. Her dress reached the floor and had a foot long tail. It pinched Sakura's waist and showed off her perfect body structure. The light pink glowed against her skin and radiated her face. The bottom part of the dress puffed out just the right amount and complemented her in just the right way.

"Say something! I worked for hours!" Madison complained.

"Uh... you look... beautiful Sakura," Li stuttered.

"Yeah real nice squirt," Tori commented.

Sakura walked up to Li, "You look handsome tonight Li." She smiled.

Li blushed, "Uh, thanks." He handed Sakura the rose bouquet, "These are for you."

"Thank you Li, they're beautiful," Sakura admired the flowers and smelled them.

Not as beautiful as you, Li thought looking at Sakura.

"Well you two better get going if you want to get to the dance on time," Tori stated pushing them towards the door.

"Yeah you don't want to be late," Madison said gesturing towards the door.

"Right, but Madison what about you? How are you getting to the dance?" Sakura asked.

"Rita and the others all agreed to meet at Nikki's house since it's the closest to the school," Madison explained wishing Sakura would just worry about herself.

"Do you need a ride?" Sakura questioned.

Li waited for Madison's response. He hoped that she wouldn't interfere with their night. "No I'm going to just walk there," Madison explained smiling. Then she leaned close to Sakura, " Remember this is your night."

Sakura nodded. "See you at the dance," She shouted taking Li's hand and walking to the limo with him. Li handed Sakura into the car and they drove off.

Madison sighed. "What a perfect couple."

"Yeah," Tori agreed. "Hey Madison do you want a ride to the dance?"

"That'd be nice," Madison said.

"You really do look beautiful tonight Sakura," Li commented.

Sakura smiled, "Thanks Li."

The limo stopped in front of the school and the driver opened the door. "We're here," He announced.

Li stepped out and helped Sakura get out and offered her his hand. She gracefully accepted and smiled at Li, causing him to blush. Li cleared his throat, "Shall we go in?"

"Okay," Sakura nodded, "Oh and Li I forgot to tell you, but I have to perform tonight. I hope you don't mind."

"It's okay," Li shrugged. He opened the door for Sakura and they both walked into the gym. It was decorated from top to bottom in beautiful streamers and balloons. Sakura blossom petals fell from the ceiling creating a snow like theme in the entire room.

Oos and awws went up from all over the gym as Sakura and Li walked in. Millions of eyes followed them as they went to the dance floor. There was a slow song playing on the speakers. "Would you like to dance?" Li asked extending his hand out to Sakura.

"I would love to," She took his hand and placed her other hand on his shoulder. Li hesitantly placed his hand around Sakura's tiny waist. Sakura's heart skipped a beat when Li touched her so gently. Sakura leaned her head on Li's chest and he blushed.

"Uh Sakura," Li spoke softly into Sakura's ear.

"Yes," Sakura replied.

"I have something to tell you," Li managed.

Sakura stopped dancing and looked up at Li. "What is it?" She asked.

Li stared at her clear emerald eyes and cleared his throat. "Um... I..."

"Sakura," Chelsea called appearing out of nowhere. "It's your turn to sing," she grabbed Sakura's arm and pulled her away from Li.

"Sorry Li I'll be right back," Sakura disappeared into the crowd.

The principal appeared on the stage and spoke into the microphone. "And now presenting Sakura Avalon singing Eyes On Me." Everyone started clapping and the principal exited the stage as Sakura walked on.

Sakura bowed. All of the spot lights on her made her glow even more and made her seem like some heavenly figure from above. The music stared. Sakura waited for the intro and began singing.

Whenever sang my songs,
On this stage, on my own.
Whenever said my words,
Wishing they would be heard.

Her voice was like an angel's and everyone was lost in the tranquility of her song.

I saw you smiling at me,
Was it real of just my fantasy.

Madison tapped Li on the shoulder and asked him, "Did you tell her yet?"

"Oh Madison, hi," Li greeted.

"Did you tell her yet?" Madison asked again impatiently.

"No I didn't get to yet," Li responded.

Madison sighed wishing Li would just hurry up, they were very scarce on time.

My last night here for you,
Maybe yes, Maybe no,
I kind of liked it your way,
How you shyly placed you eyes on me,
Did you ever know,
That I had mine on you?

Li blushed because at the last part Sakura had looked directly at him.

Meilin joined Madison and Li, "Did you tell her yet?"

"No I didn't," Li sighed.

"Li Showran we do not have all day! I just got a call from your mom and she said that we have to leave tomorrow morning!" Meilin shouted over the music.

"What!" Li exclaimed.

"That's right, tomorrow morning!" Meilin repeated.

Li sighed deeply and looked at Sakura.

So let me come to you,
Close as I want to be.
Close enough for me,
To feel your heart beating fast.
And stay there as I whisper,
How I love you peaceful eyes on me.

"Li!" Meilin shouted. "Promise that you'll tell her after this song?"

Li nodded not really paying attention to Meilin, but more on Sakura. They're eyes meet and Sakura looked away blushing.

Darling so share with me,
You love if you have enough,
Your tears if you're holding back,
Or pain if that's what it is.
How can I let you know,
I'm more than the dress and the voice,
Just reach me out then,
You would know that you're not dreaming.

Li shut his eyes wishing that Sakura really was telling him all of those things. Sakura how can I tell you? What if you break my heart?

All around him Li heard clapping and he finally opened his eyes and the lights turned back on.

"Li your crying," Madison told him.

Li wiped furiously at his tears. "I know," He spoke.

"Li here comes Sakura, you have to tell her!" Meilin said pushing him towards Sakura.

"Great performance Sakura," Li complemented.

"Thanks," Sakura smiled. "Li your crying!" Sakura shouted.

"Uh yeah," Li said shaking his head. "Can we go outside I have something to tell you."

"Okay," Sakura nodded.

They walked around the school which was lit with Christmas lights and torches. "Sakura, remember I said that I came back to Reedington to do something."

"Yeah I remember," Sakura said facing Li and looking at him in the eyes.

"Well the reason I came back was so that I could_" He started then paused.

"So that you could' what?" Sakura questioned.

"So that I could um... uh," Li mumbled something.

"What is it Li? You can tell me," Sakura reached for Li's hand.

Li blushed. "I came to tell you that I..." He looked at Sakura. Sakura, please don't leave me. "I... I... Um... I-I..." He looked deeply into Sakura's green eyes, I love you, Sakura. Now say it Li! He shouted at himself. His jaw opened and closed a few times before he could say anything then he shouted, "Sakura I love you!"

For some reason Sakura was completely shocked when Li said it so she let go of his hand. Then she remembered that she loved him back, "Li," she whispered and hugged him as she cried.

"Sakura," Li said hugging her back warm tears streamed down his face too.

They stood there for minutes just enjoying the touch of each other. Sakura hugged Li tighter. "I love you too Li Showran," Sakura whispered into his ear.

Li pulled Sakura away from him so that he could search her eyes for weather she was lying or not. Her eyes were true. He leaned in and kissed her passionately on the lips. Sakura kissed back feeling complete bliss and happiness.

They released from the kiss and Li felt so happy and optimistic and thousands of feelings all at once that he had to make sure he was awake and not dreaming. "Sakura," He asked, "Am I dreaming?"

Sakura leaned into Li, "Only one way to find out," she said before kissing Li again. Li kissed Sakura back and hugged her tightly.

There's no way this could be a dream, Li thought as he held Sakura close to him. Li looked at Sakura again smiling broadly. Then he frowned remembering what Meilin had told him.

We have to leave tomorrow, Meilin's words echoed in his head.

"Sakura," Li started.

"Yes Li?" Sakura asked not believing either that this was happening.

"I have to go back to Hong Kong tomorrow," He told her.

Sakura's eyes hardened and she let go of Li. Everything was perfect and now Li was going to leave? "Why?" she demanded starting to cry again, but not from joy or happiness.

"My mom wants us to go back," He explained and quickly added, "But I'll come back as soon as possible."

"Why, why do you have to leave?!" She screamed wiping at her tears. "Sakura, I'll come back," Li tried to calm Sakura down, " I promise I will." He reached for Sakura's hand, but she pushed him away.

"You said that last time too and it took you four years to come back!" Sakura shouted.

"Sakura!" Li spoke sharply trying to hug her and make her calm down.

"No stay away from me!" Sakura yelled then she added softly, "You'll just hurt me again."

"Sakura," Li shouted, but Sakura began to run away. "Sakura!" Li shouted again.

Sakura didn't turn around. She ran off the school grounds and into the street. She continued to run and run.

Li didn't know why Sakura was running away. So all he could do was watch her leave. Li felt pain in his heart. Not the pain of a million deaths, but the pain of seeing the one person he loved run from him. On the ground at his feet were the bouquet of roses that he gave to Sakura. He stepped over them and walked to the limo. He told the driver to take him home and the driver obliged without asking any questions.
