andrew - hypertext poetry for fun

  • Desktop Poetry is a site that lets you create poetry "fridge-magnet" style.
  • A selection of themed word-tiles are available in a grey "tool box" located on the right of the screen.
  • The author drags the tiles from the tool box to the main page where they can be freely arranged to form sentences.
  • The tool also allows the user to change the colour of the background, tile and text.
  • Poems can be saved for later editing, and the script can even be downloaded to a local computer for offline composition.
  • The creator's intention is that peoplewill use the site to create messages for friends or loved ones.
  • Once a poem is composed it can be sent to someone, who is then invited first to read the poem, then rearrange the words and send the new poetry message to the original sender.
  • The site is slightly unusual as rather than Flash or hypertext, CGI script is used.
  • Users of the site have the opportunity to browse the 5 most popular poems in a variety of categories.
  • The 5 most recent creations are also listed.
My favourites were the Romance and Classic Kits.
  • Although admittedly this site rarely produces ground-breakingly impressive material, proper use of the kits has potential.
  • The real advantage of the site is encouraging people to consider a poetic medium when normally it would notcross their mind.
  • Whereas writing an expressive poem may be considered old fashioned or not the 'done thing', this adaptation of the medium makes it not only modern but fashionable - many of us will have received an e-card of some sort at some point.
  • Thus Desktop Poetry inadvertently promotes the poetic medium.
