jenny - using multimedia in hypertext poetry

  • Most hypertext poetry on the Internet relies on a basic formula; write a poem and link from occasional key words to pictures or further explanation. To me this takes away a large part of the freedom that a reader has to ignore authorial intention and interpret a poem in their own personal manner.

  • Bluesuburbia.com creates a fantasy world in which you go looking for the poems in a kind of gaming fashion, the poems are then presented in artistic text but without links. I much prefer this presentation as it does give a new experience of reading but without altering all the advantages of poetry.

  • Bluesuburbia.com combines art and poetry for the same reasons Blake etched pictures next to his poems; to further express his poetry in a different form. In many ways I would argue Blake was using an early form of hypertext poetry - Bluesuburbia.com has the advantage of using modern tools to not only combine art and poetry but sound and movement as well.

  • An interesting journey with small pictures and wall graffiti introduces us to the poet’s opinion long before we arrive at his actual poem. I read the journey as part of the text, it reflects my journey into the poet’s mind, travelling through metaphorical and actual corridors allows me to realise his thoughts on a much deeper level than simply being presented with a short piece of writing would.
