MOTHER’S APRON STRINGS

With eyes closed, I took a deep breath
And held the apron to my face.
The smell of memories of years gone by,
Spent together in this very place.

The house is filled with relatives
Each offering a covered dish.
The aroma drifts through every room
Mingling with everyone’s gibberish.

I heard her voice in the other room
Shouting our names, calling roll.
Dinner is ready, time to come in;
There were seven of us, all tolled.

As I recall, in her earlier years,
She hummed the whole day long.
No matter what the task at hand,
Her heart always managed a song.

Her apron strings have frayed with age.
Some days, she must have felt a prisoner.
We’ve grown up, those days are over.
Today, God cut those strings for her.

DADDY’S GIRL

Once upon a time, not so long ago
In a secret room at the top of the stair,
Lived a special girl with a happy heart
Surrounded by love; she hadn’t a care.

Daddy read stories when he tucked her in,
Of heroes and princes and such.
Yet none was as handsome and brave as the one
Who calmed her fears with his gentle touch.

The night breeze rushed through the open window.
In the dark she watched the curtains billow.
She made a wish upon a falling star
And pulled her doll close to her pillow.

As tho’ gravity failed, she drifted away;
Sweet dreams engulfed her head.
The dawn brought the day’s beginning;
Her world was ending, instead.

She felt the chill in the air,
Yet, no need to go outside.
Nothing, she feared, would ever be the same.
Instinctively, she ran to hide.

They wept, not wanting to leave each other.
Decisions were made; she didn’t understand.
Years of longing for his return;
At last, their reunion was at hand.

Her heart pounded as she caught a glimpse
Of this man who completed her world.
They’ve grown older, yet nothing has changed.
She will always be her Daddy’s girl.
