Oscar
|
Oscar started dancing as a teenager in Guatemala
City where he was born and enjoyed
dancing any kind of rhythm. He's gone from
disco, merengue, soca, cumbia, and lambada to the to the rhythm that
truly captured his heart: Salsa.
His extensive training in Salsa started with the Ottawa
Salsa Legend: Ms. Helen Martin. Then continued learning more and more Salsa
by traveling to other cities including New York, in order to upgrade his style and
technique, followed by creating his own patterns, footwork and figures
that have become very popular in the Ottawa area specially among Salsa
Fever students. |
He has attended to various Salsa
Congresses held in Canada, United States and Puerto Rico, and taken workshops with
great instructors like: Eddie
Torres, Josie Neglia,
Pedro Gomez, Felipe
Polanco, Freddy Rios (The Palladium Mambo Legend), Edie the "Salsa Freak",
Super Mario, Nelson Flores (the Mission Impossible footwork man) and many others.
He has been competitively active for over 7 years and was the 1st.
winner of the "Big Prize" Ottawa Salsa Competition at "La Isla"
in November '98, 3rd place at "Jose Alberto (El Canario)" concert at
Metropolis, Montreal in 1996; and 3rd. Place at the International Salsa Web
Convention held in Toronto in 2000 behind (US Salsa dance champions) Ricardo
Sanchez and Michelle Castro and a couple from "Caribbean
Soul Dancers from N. Jersey". The last 4 years have been busy for Oscar; not only
he's been teaching all levels at Salsa Fever Dance
Studio; but he's also given numerous workshops at many of the local dance
studios and clubs. Besides teaching, he found the time to perform in about
20 shows a year; he was one of the choreographers for Ottawa in Salsa
Team Canada (this group performed in the World
Salsa Congress in Puerto Rico in August 2002).
Over these years, Oscar has become an experienced performer, choreographer
and an excellent teacher whose method has shown rapid and efficient
results.
In September of 1998, with the support of his friends and admirers, Oscar
inaugurated Salsa Fever Dance Studio, which has been running since then. His
goal is to communicate his passion of this amazing and contagious beat to people
from Ottawa and surroundings and teach them how beautiful and entertaining it can be.
