He had a library of about 5000 books and was a reular visitor to the public library.

Ed G. JACOBS Dies After Long Illness

Edwin G. Jacobs, 67, for 51 years a Macon druggist and civic leader, died at his home at 318 Vineville Avenue at 9:30pm yesterday of heart illness.

The druggist, for the last 16 years president of the Georgia State Fair Association, had been ill for several weeks and suffered an acute attack Monday night.

He last visited his drug store, Jacobs Pharmacy at Mullberry and Third Streets, on Christmas day.

Mr. Jacobs was born in Kingstree, SC, March 17, 1872, a son of the late Louis and Mary Gewinner Jacobs. He moved to Macon when he was 10 years old. It was there that he applied for a job as soda boy at the H.J. Lamar Drug Company.

"They had to build a platform for me to jerk soda on, I was so small" the druggist recalled recently. "the popular drinks in those days were lemon, strawberry and chocolate soda-waters. How I used to hate seeing a chocolate soda customer coming. The glasses were so hard to wash."

The South Carolina boy's soda-jerking job paid him $10 a month. Thirty-three years later he sold his associated stock in the business, which had become Lamar, Taylor and Riley Drug Company, for $110,000 cash. The $10,000 was for his good will and guarantee not to open a wholesale business in Macon or Atlanta. The former soda boy was worth a quarter of a million dollars then.

A few years later, Mr. Jacobs was owner of 10 retail drug stores, seven in Macon, two in Albany and one in Camilia.

"Making money in those days was easy", he said recently. He was particularly fortunate in several real estate deals, buying one piece of property for $4,000 and selling it soon after for $28,000. Much of his money, he reported last fall, was lost when he "tried to buy up all the peach farms in the state."

From soda boy at the Lamar store, Mr. Jacobs had advanced in the retail store, then in the wholesales department of the firm. The Lamar company merged with the Taylor-Peck Drug Company and became known as the Lamar, Taylor and Riley Company. Mr. Jacobs was assistant manager, sales manager and buyer. When he left the firm he sold his stock to the late R.J. Taylor. It was before and during the World War that he acquired the 10 retail stores.

During the pre-depression period and the depression he sold the stores one by one, keeping only the store at Mulberry and Third, long a masculine retreat and scene of many a hot political forum.

Mr. Jacobs was an old timer in the drug business but advanced with the times. It was he who served the first frozen drink in Macon, a pineapple gem, for which he bought the recipe for $100 from the Livingston Pharmacy in Savannah. Again, it was Mr. Jacobs who drew the first Coca-Cola in Macon.

Mr. Jacobs never studied pharmacy in school, letting his public education here suffice as background upon which to absorb his training as a druggist. Under the old ruling a man with three year's experience could stand an examination.

Mr. Jacobs did not confine his activities to the drug business. As an avocation, he turned to the entertainment field and while serving in the drug store used to spend his supper hours as doorman at a theatre. Later he became manager of the Academy of Music, an agency that booked the best dramatic talent in the country. Sarah Bernhardt and David Warfield were among the stars of the day that Mr. Jacobs brought to Macon.

"Macon was known as the best theatrical town per capita in the United States in those days" Mr. Jacobs is quoted as having said. Special trains would come from Atlanta and other cities, bringing people to our performances."

The druggist was a director in the old Georgia State Fair Association, which terminated unsuccessfully. Then a group of business men raised subscriptions and started a new association with Mr. Jacobs as president, a job he held til his death.

In addition to his drug and show business connections, Mr. Jacobs at one time also was interested in the operation of several hotels and was part owner of the old Wigwam Hotel at Indian Springs, destroyed by fire several years ago.

He was a charter member and past director of the Kiwanis Club. For several years, Mr. Jacobs served as president of the Macon Baseball Club. He was a Macon hospital commissioner for 12 years, had served on the old county road board and was a member of the county board of tax appeals.

Surviving in addition to members of his immediate family are three sisters, Mrs. Theodore Boyd Gourdin, Miss Etta Jacobs and Mr. W.I. Nexsen, all of Kingstree; four brothers, Julian Jacobs, Charleston, SC; Dr. C.D. Jacobs, Montague Jacobs and Cecil Jacobs, all of Kingstree.

Funeral services will be held at Hart's Chapel at 11am tomorrow. Dr. J.E. Sammons, pastor of Vineville Baptist Church, and the Rev. J.M. Trimmer, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate.
