TOP TEN:
Re-Envisionings of a Classic Story.

These aren't just remakes, these are movies that took some classic piece of literature that they teach in schools and do something completely original and different with it. By changing certain elements of a story, but still keeping the story and its themes in tact. A lot of these films aren't regarded in a positive way because of this new spin, but will one day be known for the "modern classics" that they are.

  1. William Shakepeare's Romeo + Juliet: (Romeo and Juliet)
  2. West Side Story: (Romeo and Juliet)
  3. Cruel Intentions: (Les Liasons Dangereuses)
  4. Bridget Jones' Diary: (Pride and Prejudice)
  5. Hamlet (Kenneth Branaugh's; 1997): (Hamlet)
  6. Dracula 2000: (Dracula)
  7. 10 Things I Hate About You: (The Taming of the Shrew)
  8. Sleepy Hollow: (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow)
  9. Hamlet 2000: (Hamlet)
  10. What Dreams May Come: (Dante's Inferno)

First of all, the only reason What Dreams May Come is at the bottom of the list is because it's not a literal adaptation, but very lossely based on the book. It's still a great film, but greatness is not what this list is about.

There's one more I wish I could've included on here, and that's the last and most recent of the modern-day Shakespeare films, "O". This movie was awesome, and the performance by Josh Harnett and Mehki Pfiefer are definately the best they've done, and Julia Stiles (on her second Shakespearean trip to the modern world) is equally as mesmerizing as the two lead males she plays against. Harnett stands out, only because the role of Iago in "Othello" is one of best written and most vicious villians of all time.
