This is something Matt, Justin, and I have been talking about for years. Not just "Best Song" as in a song created specifically for a film, but songs that have been out and have nothing to do with the film but still somehow sound like they were destined to be together.
And now, The Jester's explanations:
10. Flowers on the Wall was the one of this movie that
I picked b/c of what happened right before you hear
and see Bruce Willis singing it. If you haven't seen
the movie (and shame on you if you haven't), you know
what I'm talking about.
9. Rainbow Connection at the end of the Muppet Movie
is just a great scene. Every Muppet in the movie that
appeared earlier all showing up together and singing
it still makes me smile.
8. Hey Joe in Forrest Gump was also a hard pick b/c
there are so many great songs with great scenes but
this one really stuck with me but when Jenny's bf hits
her, everything goes slow motion and nothing else
matter in Forrest's life except getting to her bf to
defend Jenny's honor.....just great stuff.
7. Burn in the Crow. The only movie that appears
twice on this list. But these scenes are just too
good that I can't eliminate either one of them.
hearing this song while he puts on the make up for the
first time still gives me chills. Especially since it
has lines from the original comic in it, just added to
it.
6. In Your Eyes in Say Anything is something any
hopeless romantic has always wanted to do....stand
outside the window of the woman he loves and play a
great love song to proclaim his love to her.....unreal
and the perfect song for that scene.
5. Werewolves of London in the Color of Money. This
is where Vincent (Tom Cruise) goes against the wishes
of Eddie (Paul Newman) and just plays pool the way he
knows how to, and not hustle, just play. This song is
playing while Vincent is playing pool and the 360 shot
around the pool table multiple times while he is just
being as cocky as can be is just classic.
4. Somewhere Over the Rainbow in Face Off is just
beautiful for a strange reason. It's during a big
shoot 'em up gun scene and there is death and
destruction all around with this beautiful song
playing in the background. Who would have ever
thought of this but whoever did gets a nod of
approval.
3. Tiny Dancer in Almost Famous. It just goes to
show you when you are pissed at everyone you love and
you are just silent in a small room (or bus in this
case) that music can bring you together and everything
will be ok b/c the music says so. When one person
starts singing, the rest do too and everyone is happy,
even if just for a minute.
2. Dead Souls in the Crow. This is when he follows
the crow from roof top to roof top and when he jumps
off the building into the trash and realizes his
powers, he just laughs while Nine Inch Nails are
playing...."They keep calling me"....just classic.
1. Layla in Goodfellas. Many people don't know the
end of this song so they are surprised when they hear
that this is the song in Goodfellas when they discover
all of the death that occured. They find bodies all
over the place while this great instrumental part of
Layla is playing. It moved Scorsese so much, that it
was actually playing on the set when they shot those
scenes. It also ends right as a very very key and
surprising part of the movie happens so it starts and
ends perfectly and everything in between is just
great. Scorsese knows how to pick his songs for his
scenes and this the perfect song for the perfect
scene.
