TOP TEN:
Stephen King Movies.

Notice how with this one I didn't use the word 'adaptation.' That's because most of my favorite Stephen King movies aren't the most faithful representations of the horror legend's work. His more faithful version of The Shining sucks donkey balls, not to mention that with anything being adapted to the screen from another source, what will 9 times outta 10 save it is having a director with a vision and a style. So King can say what he wants about these directors that mess up his stories, but they do it for filmmaking reasons, and they know more about making good movies than he does... (I remember Maximum Overdrive, and while it wasn't horrifically bad, it ain't exactly Kubrick now is it).

  1. The Shawshank Redemption DIR: Frank Darabont
  2. The Shining DIR: Stanley Kubrick
  3. The Green Mile DIR: Frank Darabont
  4. Misery DIR: Rob Reiner
  5. Stand By Me DIR: Rob Reiner
  6. Carrie DIR: Brian De Palma
  7. The Dead Zone DIR: David Cronenberg
  8. The Stand DIR: Mick Garris
  9. The Dark Half DIR: George Romero
  10. Pet Semetary DIR: Mary Lambert

Notable absences from this list are It because I think as far as a movie goes it's pretty much a pile of crap (except Tim Currey, he was great). Almost all of the made-for-TV-movies weren't very good either, like Tommyknockers, The Shining, The Langoliers, and even Storm of the Century (which wasn't bad, just too drug out, it could've been a two hour movie if the script had been better... which is King's fault). Now I think that Silver Bullet was a good movie, not great but fun to watch, and Cujo was awesome, just not as good as the rest on this list. Needful things was also pretty good, and I regret most not including John Carpenter's excellently directed Christine. It was almost number 10, but Pet Semetary with all its flaws, is one of the scariest damn movies (tell me that the screwed up sister doesn't freak you out and you're a liar).
