My Family vs. The Tulls

Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler is the story of the Tull family through the eyes of each of its members. The story begins with the mother, Pearl Tull, as she lays on her death bed remembering her life. Her only love and husband, Beck, leaves her and her three children one night in 1944; though she refuses to acknowledge his abandonment for 35 years. The children each have their own perspective of their mother's reaction to his leaving, as well as of every other event that takes place in the family. The family members' lifetsyles portray them as separate individuals with very different virtues, but one common bond: blood. The structure of the Tull family and its members' unique characteristics are in many ways very similar, though also very different, to my own family. Therefore, I have chosen to compare and contrast my family to the Tulls as a way to analyze the characters in Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant and to examine my own family.
