For the Glory Letterbox

It all started in 1969 when Hobart Brown, a local artist in the Victorian village of Ferndale, California, made a few "artistic improvements" to his son's tricycle. Some neighbors decided to build their own machines d' arte - then challenged Hobart's kid to a race down Main Street. This led to a bet over who could build the best (or weirdest) human powered sculpture. The word got around town and on Memorial Day thousands of people showed up to see the contest! As they say, the rest is history. Today the Great Arcata-to-Ferndale World Championship is the crown jewel of the kinetic sculpture race circuit. Every Memorial Day Weekend, this 3 day race kicks off the kinetic racing season. This letterbox celebrates Kinetic Sculpture Racing.

While in Ferndale, please be sure to visit the Kinetic Sculpture Racing Museum on Main Street. Hours of operation are 10:00am to 5:00pm, 7 days a week. For more information on Kinetic Sculpture Racing click here

Russ Park is reached from Ferndale by turning left at the end of Main Street and traveling .75 miles to the gravel parking area on the right.
Take the trail and at the signboard go left uphill.
Look on the right for a moss-covered log at the corner of a switchback. Continue 45 more steps to a knobby-kneed giant. On the left hand side of this tree, underneath a cairn of rocks is the For the Glory Letterbox!
