Niles Crane's Song
This story was inspired by Garth Brooks' "To Make You Feel My Love" which was actually written by my favorite artist, Bob Dylan.
September 2030
Niles held Daphne close as they dozed on the couch. Their youngest child, Julia had left for collage only a week before, and the house was terribly quiet. To make up for the lack of children in the nest, Daphne had their older daughter, Marti, bring her children over. The boys were only 2 and 4, but it was sweet bliss. Now the grandchildren were at there home. Niles tried to get their son to come visit more, but he, too, was busy.
"Daphne, I love you."
"I love you too, Niles." Daphne fell to sleep, remembering the wedding. She dreamt of the past. Thoughts of Niles as he proposed made her dreams that much sweeter. She could faintly hear their song playing in her head.
May 2000
The two lovers had run away together. 'How romantic. I feel like its a fairy tale come true,' Daphne thought to herself. She flipped the radio on to a soft station. Garth Brooks was singing 'To Make you Feel My Love.' Niles listened to all the words, taking to heart that the song was exactly how he had treated Daphne since the moment he met her.
"You know, Daphne, this song is really us. Do you know what I mean?"
"Yes, you were always me best friend, Niles." Daphne enjoyed being able to be so honest with him now. "Happiness is being in love with someone who loves you. True happiness is when that person is your best friend."
"Did your Grammy Moon say that?"
"No....read it in the loo." His eyes sparkled as they giggled. Niles pulled the Winnibago into the Elliot Bay Towers garage. Hand in hand they went up to Frasier's apartment to get some of Daphne's things. As she changed in her room, Niles sat on the couch and looked around the apartment. It held so many memories of his one true love; the heart that gave him life; his Daphne. She was his and now he was hers. Daphne emerged from the back. Niles was mesmerized by her beauty.
"Darling, you look exquisite!" he whispered, breathless.
"Sarcasm'll get you no where. Its ripped jeans an a t shirt. All me nice clothes are back at the Inn, packed for a honeymoon that I'm not going on."
"Yet. You aren't going on yet," he corrected. "One day, one can only hope soon, you and I will go to where ever your fancy takes you. But for now, my Darling, lets get the hell out of here before Frasier gets back." Hand in hand they made their way to the door.
"Can we talk?" Daphne asked, sitting down on the couch. Niles sat next to her and listened. "What are we going to do about Donny and Mel? You are married to her. You can't just forget that."
"Please don't worry Daphne. You gave me the strength to leave Maris, whether you know it or not. If Mel takes me for everything I own, I will still be the happiest man alive because I have you." Niles kissed her softly. "As for Donny, you have to make up your mind on what you want to do. If you still want to go back to him, I'll understand, but know this, he could never love you as much as I do."
"NILES!" Frasier hollered as he burst into the apartment. "Daphne! Donny is worried sick about you!"
"Daphne? Oh my God, Honey, what happened?" Donny asked, as he ran in to her. "Honey, where is your dress? Honey?" he squeaked.
"Donny, we need to talk." Daphne spoke slowly. Each word was gabbing Donny in the heart. "I can't marry you."
"What? Why not?"
"I'm not in-love with you. I do love you, but I am not in-love with you. It would hurt you more if you found later. I am so sorry, Donny." Donny looked up at Daphne sadly.
"Its Niles, isn't it?" Daphne nodded. "Niles, I swear to God if for one second she is unhappy, I will kill you myself. You had better love her."
"I really do."
"NILES CRANE!" Mel screeched. "I'll kill you!"Frasier and Donny held her back. "How could you!"
"Mel, can't we talk? Please."
"Not with out a lawyer." Mel calmly walked out of the apartment.

April 2002
Everything was ready. Daphne had been staying with Frasier while Niles' apartment at the Montana was being redecorated. After only a few short months, Mel was out of everyone's life for good, although, the memory was all to clear. Niles and Daphne had moved in with Frasier until Niles could afford The Montana again. Eight months later, Daphne and Niles had gotten married, and started redecoratiing the apartment. Now, their first anniversery, Niles had a surprise for his wife.
"Keep them closed, Darling." He lead her up the stairs to the first door. "Okay, open them." Daphne stood in awe of the beautiful nursery that awaited an infant, who was already on its way.
"Niles, its beautiful." Niles kissed her sweetly.
"Perfact for our daughter."
"Or son."
"In time, both will have had a turn at the room." Again they kissed. It was a fairly commen occurence in the Crane house.

"Daphne, lets go to bed. Its getting a little late."
"Sing to me, Niles."
"When the is blowing in your face, and the whole world is on your case, I would offer you a warm embrace to make you feel my love. When the evening shadows and the stars appear and there is no one to dry your tears I could hold you for a million year, to make you feel my love." Niles looked down at his wife. "Daph?" She, in responce, snored softly. Niles kissed her lightly on the forhead and laid back and together, the old couple slept.
