Mission 274
by Anguirus

Mission Briefing:
One of Sampetra's small colonies on an island south of here is being attacked by an unknown force. We have this information from the lone survivor, a weasel named Stoutclaw. He showed up at the docks yesterday with a small coracle that had been assigned to the colony. He says that a huge monster attacked their camp during the night. He has no accurate description of what type of beast it is. I suspect that it is a goodbeast plot to oust us from our colonies. Take this Stoutclaw and threescore corsairs to the island and find this huge beast. Kill it, and bring its dead carcass back here to me. Also, examine the probabilities of the goodbeasts establishing a base on the island, and scout for such a base.

Mission:
*Extract of Anguirus
This weasel, Stoutclaw, seems to be out of his wits. Even me best mates are starting to worry about what were looking for, and what happens if it finds us first. Pure rubbish I tell them, but one rat that seems to want trouble, Blacktoe always pipes in. "If it's really pure rubbish then why is Stoutclaw seekin' revenge on a fake beast!" Over the seas it seems that all me troubles fade away, I think I should make an example of Blacktoe tomorrow, just another problem to fade away.

Dawn the next morn*
I grabbed a pot and a wooden ladle and started pounding it as loud as I could. Soon all beasts were up. Blacktoe grumbled "Ain't much good given us a wake up call right at dawn, were no good to no beast half awake!" Mumbled agreement followed, until the pot I was carrying fell atop the head of Blacktoe. I threw his limp body over my shoulder and carried him up the masts. I found the top riggings and tied them to his feet, letting him hang upside down. I yelled from the masts "This is were the beast that killed Sto utclaws crew will hang, only he won't wake up!" Yells of excitement rang threw the crew sensing that fun was to be had of this mission. Even the slaves felt somewhat relaxed new land meant new slaves, which meant death, or freedom to the weaker slaves.

*Late evening*
Blacktoe was well awake, but his cries were muffled out by the wind at our backs. His best mate Greentongue spoke up, "Sir, can't yee cut me mate lose, he's learned his lesson!" I stared at him blankly then airily added "If you want to join him just ask again, mates need to stick together." The conversation was over. I picked a farsighted stoat named Quicksling to keep a look out for the night. He seemed excited with the duty so I let him have some extra rations for supper. I thought that rewarding my most loyal beasts may come in handy if we fail to find the goodbeasts. Late in the night my cabin was as boring as ever, sleep had eluded me. So I decided to visit Blacktoe. I climbed partially up the masts when I spotted a dark spot on the horizon, I called down to Quicksling "Quicksling get in the crows nest and tell me if you see anything!"

The stoat shot up the mast past me then settled in the crowsnest "Aye cap'n, laaand hoooooooo!"

The cry had awakened most of the crew so I called to have all paws on deck. As the crew stumbled from their cabins the black spot was even closer. I ran up the mast and unrigged the sails. Blacktoe came screaming to the deck until I heard a dull thud and the laughs of my crew. I climbed back down and found Stoutclaw. "Is that the isle?"

"Aye, would recognizer her any where. "I patted the weasel on the back.

"Good then looks like were gonna find us a monstrous beast."

I ordered the crew to throw Blacktoes carcass overboard, then had my slave master have the oar slaves paddle at a steady beat we would land on the west coast by dawn.

Dawn
The crew was awaken and ready to start the search for the monster. I picked 10 loyal beasts, including Quicksling to stay on the boat. I arranged three parties, Two consisted of a score of beasts while Stoutclaw captained the remaining 10. I picked Greentongue to lead team one. A burly weasel named Axeheart, to lead team two and I assigned Stoutclaw to show team three his former campsite. Team one was to scout ahead and find a water source and if possible food. Team two was to scout the land and see if a base could be established. Team three was to lead the two other teams to Stoutclaws campsite and set traps.

Early evening
All teams had been successful, Greentongue had found many berries and even brought some assorted birds they had shout down. The water source he had found was efficient enough for are needs. Axeheart had found a small fort like structure, he said there were mice and a badger living there. I had him sketch a map to the encampment and set him off with team three. Stoutclaw had set up twenty traps around the area and had marked the former campsite All that was left was to wait until morning and check the traps.

Afternoon
Stouclaw and thirty beasts went to check the traps at dawn, when he came back he only had twenty beasts with him. A rat named Graggut who had been in Stoutclaws party told the tale.

"Twas horrible mates I saw the beast with me own eyes, it was all silver and as big as three badgers it came plowin' threw are party. It opened it's gob and started shoutin' arrers at us. Us that survived ran as fast as we could mates, there was no chance against that beast!"

I tried to suppress my rage but it my words came rushing out of my mouth. "You half brained grog swellin' excuse for a rat why didn't yee call for help?! We could have killed the beast and have been done with it, but no you and your mates were too scarred! If any of you see this thing yell for cover, unless you want to be chained to the oars!"

Axeheart spoke up. "Why don't we go and find this thing? It shouldn't have gotten far." I looked at him half crazed then my faced turned into a grin.

"All right then every fightin' beast get armed and ready. Axeheart lead us to the encampment you found! Quicksling pick five beasts and stay with the ship, shoot at anything that looks curious! Allright beasts move!" The beasts got there best weapons and followed Axeheart. I brought some lantern oil and some rags just in case.

Evening
We reached the encampment and set up on the woodland fringes. I had a large fire going. I yelled out "Any beast that can shoot an arrow get your bows ready! Wrap your arrow put in this here fire and shoot at the fort! If you can find some rope get some fireswingers goin!" I cheer went up as the crew went to work. Arrows hissed and sizzled as they hit the walls of the fort. Mice were carrying pails of water and dousing the flames. When a mouse peaked it head over to throw water on the flames in arrow would almost always hit them. Then it happened "Euaelia!" A giant armored badger crashed into the force. It opened it's helmet and just as Graggut had said arrows came flying out. Four beasts were instantly slain. I grabbed my mace and waited until the helmet opened again, before any arrows flew out I swung with all my might at the opening. The sound was like a ripe fruit being crushed under a boulder. I pulled the mace out. Pieces of what used to be a mouse's skull clung to my weapon. A mouse had been sitting on the shoulder of the badger. Before I could swing again the badger struck me I flew three feet then landed with a bump. I ordered all the bow beasts and slingers to shoot at the open helmet. It took ten successful arrow shoots and twelve stones to bring the badger down. The beast was finally slain. The fort was easily captured and new slaves were brought aboard. The badgers carcasses hung were I said it would until we made it to Sampetra. I lost twenty five beasts on the voyage but it was worth after the victory party at the taverns!
