Mission 443
by Kamai Steelsong

Kamai looked at the mountain from afar. It was hard to believe that a mountain could be hidden for so many seasons. The sun was just rising, making the ocean yellow-gold with its reflection. She smiled evilly and beckoned to a pine marten named Blackeye. The plump pine marten saluted. “D’you think you could assemble fivescore of able-bodied, assassins hopefully, and meet me by the taverns?” she asked. Blackeye threw a fancy salute. “Er, yes, marm!” He scuttled off obediently.

It was now afternoon. Kamai stood in front of the taverns, sharpening her sabre on a rock. If they were going to fight the lizards she would need a sharper edge to break through their tough hides. Blackeye ran up with the fivescore vermin. Kamai smiled. They were armed to the teeth, good. “Now,” she called out, “tonight we move swiftly and silently. Ublaz wants us to take over the lizard mountain. If we fail, our heads will end up on silver platters. Move out!” The vermin, with the female ferret in the lead rushed offtoward the mountain.

They had reached their destination. Crouching low, Kamai scratched her ear and sized up the situation. Six burly lizards stood sentry at the threshold. They almost resembled those cursed flesh-eating Monitors. Kamai turned to her army. “I need six archers up here now!” Two rats, a weasel, two wildcats, and an ermine came forward. Kamai produced a flagon. “I want yew t’dip yer arrers intae this, mates! ‘Tis adder venom. It should kill those lizards with one prick.” Dipping the arrows, the six archers notched their bowstrings and pulled tight. “FIRE!” she commanded. The sixarrows flew straight and true!

Slinking past the lizard carcasses, Kamai looked down the corridors. Her keen ears picked up faint rustling of scales. Beckoning for the vermin to follow her, Kamai crept down the hallways. The rustling was getting closer. Kamai drew her breath sharply as two lizards went marching past. Two flicks of her claymore was all it took to put them into an endless sleep. Still creeping, the army came to a clearing. Lizards were all around them. They were surrounded!

The army drew their weapons, ready to fight for their lives. A big lizard stepped out from the crowd. His flat yellow eyes meet Kamai’s. “Zo, why do you come to our mountain, ferret?” he snapped. The female ferret squared her shoulders and retorted, “I am ‘ere fer the mighty Ublaz! I am ‘ere because ‘is Majesty wants this mountain for ‘is own!” She pointed her sabre and a warcry ripped from her throat, “ATTACK!”

Kamai ducked a claw and blocked a tail. Now back to back with a weasel named ThunderClaw, she talked to her, while gasping for air. “Thunder, ‘ow many have we lost?” The weasel swung her bolas at a lizard’s neck, rewarded with a sickening crack. “I dunno, Kammers, prob’ly onescore. We were outnumbered five to one, I figgure.” The ferret flicked her sabre, slaying anything scaly. She could see the lizard Chieftain yelling. “Get the intruderz! Fight harder!” She whispered anxiously to ThunderClaw. “’M goin’ t’get the Chieftain. Keep slayin’!” Kamai slashed her way through the melee. Getting up to lizard Chief, she ducked his claw and managed to slash his ankles. Dancing with rage, the lizard drew his scimitar. “Your bonez will rot here, zcum!” Kamai smiled and slammed her sabre into his ribs, the blade protruding from his back. She whispered to the lizard’s grimaced face. “Remember to say hi to all the dead when you get tothe Dark Forest!”

Carnage was all about. Vermin were licking there wounds. The female ferret let out a ragged sigh and beckoned to a rat named Bloodtooth made the report. “Marm, we’ve lost twoscore and a half. But we’ve captured the mountain! Can we report now?” Kamai nodded and led the army to the palace.
