Mission 473
by Glamdring

Mission:
An unusually large weasel entered the tavern with an expressionless face but with purpose in his eyes. The large weasel looked back and forth over the faces of the tavern patrons and saw a small, graying rat sitting at the bar drinking from a mug. He walked over to the rat and sat on an empty stool next to him.

"You are a spy, are you not?" said the weasel. "Who wants t' know?" was the rats blunt reply.
"I do. My name is Glamdring. I am on a mission from the emperor himself."
"Well, good for you. Aren't you just so special with your "special mission" an' all? Now go away." Said the rat rudely.
"Are you not the spy that was sent to observe the two strangers walking around the lizard barracks?!" Said Glamdring, his patience growing thin.
"Yeah. Whatzit to ya?!"
"Tell me what information you have gathered or I will have you killed for interfering with a mission from his royal highness -- a mission in which urgency is most crucial."
"Alright, alright!. Don't get your tail in a knot! I'll tell ya what ya wanna know."
"Then hurry up and tell me, rat!" Said Glamdring firmly.

Glamdring drank from a bottle of his favorite drink, Everclear, while he listened to the rat rehearse his findings of the two suspicious beasts.

"They apparently only come out during the day. I followed 'em to their lair one time when they left. It's about two hours away from the barracks by foot; an abandoned cabin as it turns out. They also seem t' be unafraid of any creature, big or small. Beware the wildcat, he carries a broadsword and a poisoned dirk. He's also as fast as lightnin'. Th' lizard on th' other hand is as slow as a slug and as dumb as brick. He's really strong though, and he carries an awfully large mace. I would warn ya not to try attackin' them while they're together. I found a spot to watch them and not be seen. There's a large grouping of rocks in front of th' barracks about a hundred yards out. Ya can use those to watch 'em. I'd suggest watching 'em for a few days so ya can study how they move. Now go away and let me drink in peace." "Thank you." Glamdring stood up and swallowed the rest of the bottle's contents in one gulp. As he put the bottle down with a thud he spoke to the rat. "You had best be more careful in the way you treat and talk to beasts that are bigger than you." With that he back-handed the back of the rats head, making the rat sprawl over the counter of the bar, spilling his mug, and walked out the door.

A few days passed before Glamdring arrived at the barracks. It was early in the morning when he got there and he saw the group of rocks that the spy had mentioned. As he walked over to them he noticed a small firepit, some discarded objects and a bed roll. "Must be where he camped, too." he said to himself. He decided to make the best of it and sat on the bed roll, leaned against a rock and waited for the beasts to show up. While he was leaning against a rock he thought to himself about how he was going to attack them. After a few hours of waiting he heard some voices muttering impatiently about something. He slowly peeked over the top of the rock formation to see where it was coming from. Sure enough the wildcat and lizard were standing at a corner of the barracks arguing about something. Just then he noticed some crates about half the distance away that would conceal him so that he could get close and hear what they were saying. He quickly moved over to the crates and was surprised at what he heard. "I think they're on to us Kosaan! I saw a small camp over behind those rocks yesterday!" said the lizard. "Nonsense Paktu! It's probably just some traveler that wanted to camp close to a place of refuge." Replied the wildcat. "I don't thinkso. I think we should call this whole assassination thing off!" said Paktu. "Now what have I told you about thinking? Hmm? I've told you not to think. That's my job! Got it?!" Kosaan said irritated.

As Glamdring watched from behind the crates he lost his balance slightly and stepped back snapping a twig. In the current situation it sounded as loud as a cannon. "What was that?!" Said Paktu as he spun around, quickly getting his mace ready to hit something. "Did you hear that Kosaan?" "Yes I did. Maybe your hunch was right. Maybe they HAVE sent spies after us." the wildcat said in a whisper as he pulled out his broad sword. "I knew you shouldn't have killed that rat! But no, you just had to kill it!." Said Paktu "Shut up lizard!" Kosaan said brashly. "Let's see what that noise was." Glamdring was peering between two crates watching the wildcat and lizard moving closer and closer. He pulled out his hand axe and gripped his staff, which he had lowered so they couldn't see it, tighter in his paw. He crouched close to the ground and waited until they were nearly on top of him.

The wildcat stopped and sniffed the air but the lizard was too intent on the possibility of smashing something to notice the him. Just as the wildcat realized there was actually a beast behind the crates he yelled out at Paktu, "STOOOOPP!!." But it was too late, Glamdrings enormous form vaulted over the crates. His axe, shining in the sun, swung down and struck the lizard in the spine, sending blood into the air. Glamdring landed hard on Paktu's shoulders, knocking him to the ground. "I have come to stop you from assassinating the emperor!" said Glamdring, his eyes blazing with fury and his axe dripping with blood. "You will have to kill me first, weasel!!" said Kosaan with almost as much anger in his eyes."Then prepare to die, fiend!"

They both rushed at each other. As Kosaan ran forward he pulled out his poisoned dirk. Kosaan swung at Glamdring with his broadsword and jabbed at the same time with his dirk. Glamdring blocked the sword with his staff and knocked away the dirk with his axe. Putting his right shoulder down, he lunged forward, ramming into the chest of Kosaan. As the wildcat fell over Glamdring fell on top of him. Kosaan struck Glamdring's back with his sword, opening the flesh. Glamdring gritted his teeth trying to ignore the pain and head-butted the wildcat. Kosaan saw a flash of white from the blow then everything went black as Glamdring hit him on the side of the head with the flat of his axe.

The sun was setting and the wind was blowing strong at the jetty.

A large weasel stood proud and tall. With his shoulders back and his chest out, he held a staff in his right paw. Two tridents, one on either side, were stuck in the rocks. And upon these were the heads of two beasts, a wildcat and a lizard.

Not having a home to go to, he wandered aimlessly into the wilderness. A sudden gust of wind blew against his retreating figure making his cloak flap behind him like a loose sail.

He was Glamdring. He was from nowhere, and he was from everywhere. He was victorious. He was Glamdring.
