Dramedy-Sam Dawson has the mental capacity of a seven-year old. When his daughter Lucy (named after the Beatles' song) reaches her seventh birthday, she is taken away because she will soon be smarter than her own pappy. Sam's neighbor, agoraphobic Annie, has helped Lucy out since she was born. After looking for legal service, Sam stumbles upon Rita Harrison, who takes Sam's case to impress her collegues by doing pro bono work. After Lucy and Sam run away for a bit, Lucy is put in a foster home, under the care of Randy Carpenter. Now, Sam must try to get Lucy back in court while struggling to cope with workaholic Rita.
7/10-A heartwarming flick. Sean Penn excels as the retarded Sam, while young Dakota Fanning is great as Lucy, too. Michelle Pfeiffer is what you'd expect from her. I Am Sam has great dramatic moments, and some humorous times, too. However, the ending leaves you with some questions that they didn't answer.
Rated PG-13 for language.
