Monty Python's The Meaning of Life: 4/10

First of all, I have to say that I love Monty Python. MP and the Holy Grail is one of my all time favorite comedies. But this one wasn't funny.

Britain's bad boys conjour up a series of sketches that they always wanted to do and put them together in a format that is supposed to make sense. Those fish were right, nothing in the movie had anything to do with the Meaning of Life. Basically, we went through seven stages of life, from birth to death. Most of the skits didn't really have much to do with the time slot (such as the world's most obese man).

In some ways, it reminded me of History of the World-Part One. An early 80's movie from once-great people who are trying to come back by having a sketch movie. While HOTW had some funny skits, it was still hit-and-miss. Same with The Meaning of Life. All of their jokes were either laugh or don't, but for me none of them hit. I laughed some times, but it felt forced, since I love the group and I wanted to like this movie. There were only a few genuine laughs.

One more part of the movie that I really hated was the opening (our short feature presentation). It was stupid, unfunny, and went on for way too long. It would have been OK if it was five minutes, but 16? No, I don't think so! I did like how it was incorperated into the movie, but way too illogical.

If you take a George Carlin show, add a few touches of Mel Brooks, put a dash of Sam Kinison, you've got The Meaning of Life. Sure, some of the skits are memorable (such as the sperm song) and the movie in general is entertaining, but it doesn't deliver the laughs that I have known them to deliver.

Rated R for nudity, sexual diologue, and some language.
