The Naked Gun: From the Files of the Police Squad!: 8/10

From the goofs that created Airplane! and Rat Race (David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker), here comes The Naked Gun, based on their short-lived TV series (Police Squad!).

Leslie Nielsen is dunderheaded Lieutenant Frank Drebin, who is part of L.A.'s Police Squad. He's been their for awhile, but isn't the sanest person in the sanitarium. When the Police Squad is called on to protect the Queen of England on her visit to America, Frank is the main man. Along the way, he meets someone who may be in a plot to assassinate her.

This may look like a plotless comedy, and it somewhat is. Just like Airplane!, it manages to have lots of sketches while still in the plot (unlike Austin Powers, for instance). Like the scene in Ludwig's office when Frank, let's say, changes it's decor. Nielsen is like his other films-the type of character who doesn't think he's funny but he is. Some jokes are tasteless (like the statues), but some are full of taste. Well, now that I think about it, there weren't many tastefull jokes, but The Naked Gun still made me laugh.

There weren't as many funny parts as Airplane! (which was one huge laugh), but some scenes were side-splitting. The ending momentum slowed down some at the baseball game finale, and his checking the players got old after awhile. It was just in to stretch the running time to 85 minutes (which was a perfect length, by the way). Besides what I did, there's not much more to say about it except it's really funny and recommended.

Rated PG-13 for sex-related humor.
