Pregnant women should avoid using the Bay herb.
Since Bay leaves can induce menstruation.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Leaves, berries and oil have excitant and narcotic properties.
Leaves are regarded diaphoretic and in large doses as an emetic.
Except as a stimulant in veterinary practice
the leaves and fruit are very rarely used internally.
They were formerly employed in hysteria,
amenorrhoea, flatulent colic, etc.
Berries have been used to promote abortion.
Leaves were formerly infused and taken
as tea, and the powder or infusion of the berries was taken
to remove obstructions, to create appetite, or as an emmenagogue.
Four or five moderate doses were said to cure the ague.
Berries were formerly used in several
French carminative preparations.
USES
Protect grain for livestock; to keep bugs from the grain,
add a cheesecloth bag full of bay leaves to the grain barrel.
Bug free grain and flour; Add bay leaves to small bag
of pepper (black or cayenne) and tie tight.
Add to flour bin to keep weevils out.
External Use
An infusion or tincture can be used to help heal bruises,
sore joints, Prevent dandruff and when used as a hair rinse.
Poultice on chest for bronchitis and chest colds.
Internal Use
Bay Leaves may be used as a leaf infusion or tincture.
This can help; indigestion, poor appetite
induce menstruation and prevent gas.
Hysteria
To calm patient, drink tea made from bay leaf.
Pour 1 cup boiling water over 2 bay leaves.
Steep 10 minutes, remove leaves and sweeten with honey.
